Hi folks,

Have had the Barclays card for about 2 years now, and I got it because of the 2%. They have watered that down a bit, and I see a lot of folks on the CC thread talking about the Chase options.

I'm thinking about switching? I've always looked at it as 2% vs something less than 2%, but I think because you can get rewards differently from Chase than you can from Barclays, the rewards might be better.

With Chase offering 50K points right now on Sapphire preferred, should I switch?

I spend about $3K per month on my card if that matters. I have the Delta Platinum for airline, so this would be for other purchases than airline.

I've posted this in the CC thread, but most often it gets lost there in conversation. Advice?

Is there a reason why you would like to stick to the Delta Platinum for airline purchases? With that card you are earning 2x on Delta purchases only and those points can be used on Delta redemptions only.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred will get you 2x points on Dining and Travel and these points can be transferred to a host of different Airlines and Hotels to redeem, making these points much more valuable. More often than not you will get a value of at least 2 cents per chase points making the earning rate an effective 4%. If you are looking for plain cashback there are better options. The best value for points, however, lies in transferring points to travel partners.

The current CSP bonus after adding Authorized User and completing min spend will get you almost 60K points. To put things in context: I just recently redeemed 60K Chase points for round trip travel from Nola to Athens+Santorini with stops in Istanbul and Munich (~$2,500) giving me a value of a little over 3.5 cents per point.

TL;DR: If you are looking to redeem points for travel and maximize travel/dining purchases, get the CSP and switch all spending on this card.

Here is a link for the CSP, check it out: LINK

Goes without saying - if you have questions about redeeming Chase (or any other) points for maximum value towards travel, just ask.

Thanks for the reply. Delta is only major carrier near where I live, so most flights are on Delta. When I fly for work, I fly Delta 90% of the time, so it allows me to accrue miles that way. I only use that card sparingly outside of Delta purchases. Plus with the companion cert and bag fees waived, it doesn't cost me much for the card.

But, I'm thinking the Barclays rewards isn't as good as the Chase card/cards, so that was the bulk of my question.

I'm thinking it's time to switch. I have about 140K Barclays points to use up, will probably do that on a vacation stay, then use Chase going forward.

At the very least I'd switch to the citi double cash card over the Barclays

It's 2% straight cash back and has no annual fee.

The best redemptions for Chase are usually business/first class and/or international flights booked after transferring to partners. They are good deals but they aren't always what I need/look for.

I plan to cancel my Barclays at renewal and stick with the Chase SP I already have. I also plan to sign up for the Freedom to pair with my SP once I cancel the Barclays.

Anyone know if the Barclays is churnable?

Yes it is in theory. Good luck with Barclays though. My only denial ever.

I did this exact scenario a couple months ago. Barclay just doesn't bring enough to the table to justify their yearly fee.
