AT&T Inc. is in advanced talks to acquire Time Warner Inc., according to people familiar with the matter, a deal that would create a new hallmark in the rapidly converging realms of media, communications and the internet.
A deal, which could happen as early as this weekend, would unite AT&T’s portfolio of wireless, broadband and satellite TV services with Time Warner’s entertainment empire, which includes cable networks such as TNT, TBS, CNN, the coveted premium channel HBO, and the Warner Bros. film and TV studio.
The talks toward what likely would be a cash-and-stock deal have come together quickly, are fluid and still could fall through, according to people familiar with the matter. An agreement also could be delayed, they said.
Time Warner shares rose 9.6% to $90.94 in late-morning trading after The Wall Street Journal reported the advanced talks, white AT&T fell 2.6%.

AT&T paying up everything again just like they did a couple of decades ago before the government stepped in and broke it up.

No way this gets passed the FCC and Feds... Talk about creating a monopoly.
AT&T would own three major broadcast services (Uverse, Directv, Time Warner Cable)

Time Warner Cable is being bought by Charter Cable. At&t is buying the network itself.

Far, far from a done deal.
Barry hasn't been kind to these mega mergers, though a chance to control that much media may be too lucrative for him to pass up. This shouldn't be approved. I'm being somewhat sensational, but not too much.
I kind of doubt this passes the regulatory hurdles.

What would this mean for consumers? Could HBO and other Time Warner programming potentially be exclusive to DirecTV, Uverse, and Time Warner Cable?

Uverse no longer exists. TimeWarnerCable has been sold off in pieces based on various geographies and if any of it still remains it's not part of this content only deal.
