I work for a small business (<40 employees). I used to work for a large manufacturing company here locally, so I'm been with both.
The things I like about the small business are also some of the things I dislike. I like knowing everyone in the company, but I also see what they do all day, and many of them don't do a lot quite frankly.
Our CEO has hired many of his friends from his church, and they take advantage of their situation being close friends with him, and don't do all the work they are supposed to be doing, and it kind of honks me off.
Our benefits currently are better than I had at my large corporation job, but we were just told at our last staff meeting that major changes are coming to our medical coverage because of Obamacare, so I might change my mind on that before end of year.

Like others have said, I think it depends on personal preference.
Since grad school, I have worked for 3 companies. The first had 500 employees, the second had 2800 and my current employer has 30000+.
The benefits got progressively better and IMO, middle and senior management seems to work better. Definitely more professional. You also have more opportunities to change roles without switching companies.
However, at my first employer, the CFO, CIO and COO all knew me by name very early on. Pretty cool when you're fresh out of school. Contrast that to today, where the EVP over my division is only vaguely aware of my existence.

I've worked for two small businesses. My experience isn't everyone's, but both small business owners I worked for were lunatics that couldn't have worked in an actual corporate environment.
There are some positives. Decisions are made quicker, you usually have a direct line to man who can give you a final answer. However, the "management" structure is usually whoever's been there the longest, or has figured out how to make the owner happy. And there's no buffer between you and the lunatic if he's off the reservation.
My experience with fellow small business employees is that very few would be able to cut it in a larger company.

That is true in my office as well. We used to get the same amount of work done, with half the employees it seems. I walk by peoples offices and they are talking/texting on their phones, or have Facebook open.
