Are all small business terrible to work for?

Went to interview with a small company. They told a friend that they really needed some "good" help but had a hard time getting people they can count on. Well my experience matched up great with what they needed and the interview went great. They ask my current salary, with another small company, my current pay is terrible (1 year out college). After I tell them my pay the interview continues on for a while just fine with no hesitation and they tell me to expect an offer. I get the offer and its 15% less than my current pay. And they wonder why they have trouble finding and keeping people. and the company is small in people but it is an international company that is doing quite well

I've seen the same trend in my field.

Qualified people exist. They are not going to work for nothing.

Smaller companies can't risk bad hires. You'll probably get very good pay raises if you are worth keeping.

I would counter with an offer more to your liking.

If you are only 1 year out of college they probably think of you as just another body at this point. Sorry but true, and you would do well to point out that you think you need a reason to change jobs and aren't interested in taking whatever comes first.

I like the one I work for and the folks I interviewed with seemed like great folks. but Im not gonna take a pay cut to try and prove myself to you when Ive already a similar opportunity.
I guess don't understand how so many small business owners can complain that there workers aren't any count. All your good ones leave first chance they get I see it everyday

I'm working for a pretty small business (<15 employees). I took a slight pay cut, from 48,000 to 45,000 to work here, mostly because I really needed to move out of Louisiana.

I kind of enjoy the lack of structure that comes with it. I work at my own pace without 4-5 supervisors watching me, and I've already gotten two raises in the past year, so now I'm making substantially more than I did before.

Wife and I have both gone from huge companies (+\- 3000) to smaller (+\- 100) and love it. Easier to stand out/promotion if you kill it, neither of us would make nearly as much money at former co's.

Supply and demand.

There's a boatload of employable people out there with the shite experience of 1 year out of college.

This is hilarious.

Your current employer has taken massive risk and invested in you and you are looking to jump the ship with ZERO loyalty to him.

Multiply this times how many people work for your company and you see why being a small business employer can really suck.

You like the one you work for but are shopping yourself with zero concern for the one you work for.

Bet you'll complain if you get shite-canned with no notice one day.

No but seriously, if you went from working at a large company to a company such as mine, a decrease in pay with the added benefits that we get (working from home, lack of micromanagement, results only work environment, etc) completely make up for it.

Of course, we only hire competent people now. I guess at least you aren't spending your time on the OT.

Anything under 2 years we consider more or less on the same level as new college grad hires. But they do have a leg up in terms of how quickly they are ready for a promotion.

Not necessarily, I took a job making peanuts out of college to get experience in the field I wanted to go in. Well after about 8 months of doing very well, my boss up and leaves for another opportunity. I get a promotion running the department and at that time I'm promised a tremendous raise. Well it comes time for them to give me the raise they promised and they gave me less than a 1K raise. I promptly intensified my search for a new job just so I could get the hell out of there.

I worked for a small business in NC after college. It was a nightmare. The owner was a lunatic who tried to micromanage every dept. and would fly off the handle at the smallest thing. They were all into how "professional" they were, but in actuality were anything but. The owner saw something like 50% growth in his first 5 years of operation and expected that trend to continue 15 years later. He set unrealistics goals and flipped out when they were not met. He witheld all raises one year b/c he wasn't making any money. I had a manager tell me the guy was nuts b/c he was making a considerable profit, just not as much as he wanted. Apparently the owner got extremely greedy. Couldn't keep any good help either and had to start hiring temps. Eventually even the temp agency refused to send anyone b/c of conditions at that office. I lasted about 5 months there, but it was crazy. I'll never work for an owner again. Give me a corp with managers anyday.

Yeah, if your working for a small business owner you've got a dead end from day one it seems like. and whats even more frustrating is that the 10-15 year old kids\grandkids will be your boss in 10 years

I've worked for 3 small businesses since I've been out of college. ive found you work a lot harder than at larger ones but they will end up paying you good money to stick around since they need you so bad. but, if i had to do it all again i probably wouldn't have worked at any small places. i always get "who are they?" when i interview and i feel that the small companies usually don't know how to do things as well as the larger ones
