We all have seen a ref get in the way, but I can't recall seeing one deliver a blow like this one did.
I think you are right in that the ref seems to be more protecting himself than anything else.

Watch Garcia from start to finish....If Garcia DOESN'T TURN TOWARD the referee, then no contact is made. USC's offensive scheme the 1st half was using this ref for pick plays in which TWO were sucessful. The 3rd one was not. I'm sure the ref was thinking at the time of his hit--> Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, you not going to fool me again fool.
