1970 Ole Miss vs LSU Now,I'm old enough to remember this. But its somewhat amusing watching some old footage with how football broadcasts are produced now. At the time ABC would have the respective teams' starters line up and step to the camera one by one. The simplicity of the graphics and production in general is pretty cool.
This was Archie Manning's last regular season game.LSU had finished the 1969 season 9-1 and Ole Miss finished 8-3 with a Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas.Honestly Ole Miss was as good as any team at the end of the year (two of their 3 losses were by one point, 10-9 to Ky and 33-32 to Ala)
Ole Miss was preseason #5 in the nation and LSU was preseason #12. ABC got the two to agree to move their game from Halloween to December 5th in anticipation of top 5/10 showdown. Didn't quite work out as LSU was #8 and Ole Miss was #16. LSU lost its season opener to a terrible A&M team 20-18 the week after the sudden death of third team QB Butch Duhe. The only other loss was at South Bend to then #1 Notre Dame, 3-0. Ole Miss moved up to #4 before being shocked by Southern Miss, 30-14.
Ole Miss' head coach John Vaught suffered a heart attack after the Southern Miss loss. If you watch this clip, you'll see their interim head coach,"Bruiser" Kinard introduced as coach.Three weeks later Manning broke his arm vs a good Houston team. Ole Miss later lost to Miss State, 19-14 taking some luster of the LSU game.
Still, it worked out that the winner of the Ole Miss-LSU game would win the SEC. Taped and wired up,Archie started this game and Ole Miss actually led 17-7.

That's a fascinating clip. Many gems for the LSU devotee:
- The old style helmets, which please me because of their straightforward austerity;
-The students at the back of the north end zone seem absurdly close to the playing field;
- Is that a hedge at the back of the SEZ, rather than a fence?;
- What is at midfield? A crest? Something else?;
- The players looked so fragile and mortal and youthful in comparison to today's muscled behemoths;
- Rarely have I seen a punt return more poorly covered than Casanova's TD. It looks like Ole Miss had five players on the field.

this game was one of my first memories of LSU football. Even as a 6 year old, I remember watching on TV, remember Andy Hamilton and Tommy Cassanova dominating, rememeber Archie's cast, etc.
Another big memory was the following year when we destroyed Notre Dame 28-8.
All of this was back in the day when very, very few games were televised. But these two were.
Great memories.

A couple of things I noticed:
legal blocking below the waist on punt returns. Very effective!
I think the midfield decor was "TIG" on the north side of the 50 and "ERS" on the other.
How about Cholly Mac in a suit?

Our offense has been crap for nearly 50 years.

My first year attending LSU games. 12 years old. I was at this game and in my mind I can still see Casanova running towards me in the south end zone for his two punt return touchdowns. He made it look so effortless.
He was the reason I wanted to play cornerback.

That was also when the south end zone had the colors and initials of the visitors painted on it. Red and blue “UM”. Midfield also had a checkered square of both schools colors.

I was a second year student in the student section, and it was crazy loud all the time.

The students seem closer because they were closer to the field.
The playing field was moved about five yards South sometimes in the mid 80s.
Notice too the big crown in the middle of the field. That was also taken out in the mid 80s to help the passing game.

]The players looked so fragile and mortal and youthful in comparison to today's muscled behemoths;
probably thinking that the day their eligibility ran out, or they flunked out, they were headed for Viet Nam
they could and would kick the shite out of these, "select," younger day punks

One thing you will notice...after a touchdown they don't act like it was the first one ever scored or go into a dance or beat their chest like they did it all by their self!
Just sayin....

Manning's mom wrote a letter to Mike Anderson after that game, thanking him for not killing her son when he had the chance, used to be in the restaurant

I was at that game and the one thing that has stuck with me, is the respect that was shown to Archie.
He had a cast on and on many occasions LSU could have drilled him and possibly ended his pro career, but LSU chose not to...in some cases just grabbing him .

I see Jim Crow was a strong player for both teams.
