You need a good offense to win, and Les hasn't shown he can make one

We all know that great defenses win championships, but what isn't understood is that you usually need a very good offense as well. Here are LSU's national rankings (in total yards) over the years:
Year - Offense / Defense
2005 - 39 / 12
2006 - 14 / 2
2007 - 9 / 9 *NC
2008 - 51 / 35
2009 - 102 / 30
2010 - 81 / 13
2011 - 57 / 5
2012 - 77 / 9
2013 - 33 / 15
For reference, here are Alabama's:
Year - Offense / Defense
2005 - 63 / 1
2006 - 56 / 16
2007 - 67 / 26 (Saban's first year)
2008 - 41 / 5
2009 - 15 / 3 *NC
2010 - 22 / 7
2011 - 30 / 1 *NC
2012 - 19 / 2 *NC
2013 - 32 / 4
It looks like since 2007 our offense has fallen over a cliff and has never really shown greatness. What is very alarming is that last year's team was loaded with NFL talent (NFL QB, 3-4 NFL WR's, 3-4 NFL RB's, 2 NFL o-linemen) yet only reached a national ranking of 33.
2 Main Summations from me:
1) It is very questionable that it is even possible to develop a great offense under Les Miles.
2) Anyone who wants to run Chavis out of town should take a look at just how good our defense has been over the years. His worst defense has been better than our best offense since he has been here.

Miles thinks a good offense is having a punter that averages 50 yards a kick. Oooooh, field position!!!

We just set an sec record on offense last year. If you weren't satisfied with last year's offense then you're an idiot.

Did not even represent their own division in the SEC CG - received a mulligan (as media darlings) and allowed to play their own conference champion in the big game, despite having lost to them at home in the regular season.
*Yeah, buddy, I'm mad. Wanna make something out of it?

Because SEC defenses are best in the country and it's tough to rack up gaudy numbers against such defenses.
Better numbers would be to use national defense rankings and conference offense rankings.

Everyone wants an Xbox offense. When was the last time a gimmicky offense won a national championship.

I am actually very surprised at how dividing the national rank by 10 gets you close to the SEC rank most years. So I guess the national ranking is very relative.
Also surprised we were 7th out of 14 last year in the SEC in total yards.

you don't need a good offense to win.
you just need a competent offense to win.
LSU is far from both at the moment.

We just set an sec record on offense last year. If you weren't satisfied with that, find another team to cheer for. I'd also like to add, in the last 4 seasons Bama didn't play The 1st 2nd or 3rd place east team while lsu played at least one every year and sometimes two. Hell bama hasnt played Georgia in the regular season since 2008 and USC since 2010. Lsu has played both numerous times.

Most years the best team has an excellent offense. 2011 was an anomaly. Personally I think our defense was better than the ranking suggests and the offense was worse, but that's just my opinion.

We just had the greatest offensive year in the history of the SEC...

Look at the last 10 years and let me know where LSU ranks as far as winning programs.

Can't come here with that. We don't have a good offense this year so it follows that we have never and will never have a good offense under Miles.

quote:What measure are you using for this? And we did have a good (not great) offense last year, but we had a 5th year senior who is in the NFL this year, 2 RB's including a 5th year junior who are both playing in the NFL this year, 3 NFL WR's and an NFL o-lineman. All of whom will likely be joined by a few other players from last year's offense in the NFL soon enough. To have that level of talent and experience in this day and age is extremely tough to accomplish, and we still didn't knock the doors off of college football.

Most sane people here are concerned more about the D, because that has been LSUs strong area over the years.
The O hasn't done much and OL and TEs are perplexing.
And yes, relatively speaking in the SEC and Nationally the D did better than the O last year.
