You can't teach Arm Strength!

I was thinking about it today and I remember hearing that phrase a lot when people were evaluating JaMarcus for the draft. And then I thought how some of Hatch's critics have said he lacks great arm strength. Now, you may not be able to teach arm strength, but can't you at least gain this attribute by working out in the gym more? I am not talking about JR type stuff, but if Hatch really needed to gain some, could he just do that or is it more complicated? How easy is it to improve arm strength?

no but yo can teach him how to get stronger. Then he will gain arm strength

Pumping iron is not going to equate much to arm strength, in terms of throwing a football, or a baseball for that matter. This is analogous to teaching speed. You can improve on it some, but either you got it, or you ain't. Now if you could improve someone's synap's, that would help...

I wonder why. It would seem that if you gain muscle in the biceps and such, it would increase how far you could throw the ball. Not sure what really helps create more velocity on a throw.

Long toss is pretty much the only thing that will increase arm strength. The weight room doesn't help at all. If anything it hurts you if you lose flexibility.

Yep, long toss and resistance bands will help some but pumping iron tightens muscles which will decrease "arm strength" for throwing.

If you could teach arm strength don't you think all quarterbacks would be equal? Either you got it or you don't. It's like teaching a running back when to make their cuts. Or teaching a WR to plant his foot and pick out the open areas of the field like Josh Reed did so well. It's a natural instinct.

Velocity for throwing a baseball or football is related to the torque created when you throw the ball. It really is a gift, so to speak, to have the natural ability to throw. You either have it or you don't (which is why people say you can't teach it). Obviously you can teach someone to throw a baseball or football correctly, but not to the point of being a QB or pitcher. As for arm strength, it really doesn't matter. Look at The Unit, he's skinny as hell. But look at how hard he throws. In fact, you can be TOO big and decrease your velocity. If you're a body-builder type, there is no way to have the kind of velocity you need to be a QB. Not as sure with QBs, but as a pitcher we were told to concentrate more on working out our legs, as the "push off" on the mound is a factor in velocity. FWIW.

You can hit the weights or improve tecnique and improve a little, but like in baseball, you either can or can't throw a 90 MPH fastball. You may be able to "teach" a few MPH. The speed analogy works well. You can improve a little, but your not going to go from 4.8 to 4.4 by training.....

Had a friend that pitched for Moo State a while back and he said when he went from about 190 to 235 his pitching speed decreased - he's about 6'5''

It has more to do with core strength, arm speed, and flexibilty. How much one can curl or bench press doesn't have as much to do with it as the attributes I mentioned first.

Correct. You need flexibility. And too much muscle decreases your flexibility, which in turn decreases your velocity. Ever see a picture of a pitcher's arm at it's most torqued-out point? It's sick looking.

You can improve technique, which can drastically improve speed and accuracy.

But, no, you can't create a canon arm from the gym.

Look at Jeff George. He had the fastest delivery I've ever seen, and excellent velocity, even at the end of his career. And he didn't do a lot of weight lifting.

you're either born with that ability or you're not. no matter how much i work out or practice I won't be able to throw a football 75 yards or a baseball 90 mph. granted, with practice and conditioning i can add a few yards or a few mph - but there is a limit, and it's genetics. I think that's what they mean when they say 'you can't teach arm strength'.

Correct. It is basic eye - hand corrdiation, which is goverened by the synaptic barriers. Someday they will learn how to improve this, and that will be scary.
