re: Would you consider Jay Johnson’s first regular season successful?

I would consider his first regular season an A, mainly because of the Ole Miss series. Without that it would have been a regional host and an A+

We should be in Omaha.
Soooo, still to be determined.

If you think about where this team would be without Berry, Reyzelman, Cooper, Jobert & Gervase…then I’d say it was a success.
But what if we didn’t have Crews, Doughty, Morgan, or Hilliard? What’s your point?
By the way, before you respond because I think I know where you are going with this, Gervase and Jobert were recruited to come here by Mainieri, so you can thank him for that.

Most people would say he did ok. But you always have the nay-sayers that nothing satisfies them.

With the starting pitching that we have, I would give him an A-/B+. Our Friday night starter don’t break 90mph and Saturday/Sunday starters have been a shite show most of the year. Coleman out for year hurt a lot. The Friday night starter from the beginning of the season has been relegated to spot bullpen and blow out work. Your supposed shut down closer in Fontenot is useless in critical situations.
The middle infield were 1 & 2 in the SEC in errors made (let that sink in for a minute). How many more games do they win if we can make a routine play in the middle?
Dugas missed a lot of games, Berry missed the last couple series and SEC tourney(Doughty too), which cost them a good shot at a National seed.

It's because there are so many PULMONARY fans! Thank God Truman Capote isn't in the Tiger dugout any more fricking shite up! Happy for CJJ and his staff going forward!

Abso-freaking-lutely. If it wasn’t for the god awful starting pitching Maneri left behind, this team is a top 8 seed. Even with the defensive woes. Could you imagine what this pitching staff would have been with the previous regime. The dude coached his arse off this year. We have the right guy.

So, is your shtick that you hate every LSU coach except Ed O?

And before you get butthurt about my comment, I’m allowed to acknowledge Johnson’s contributions to the roster without shitting on Mainieri. Even without Gervase and Jobert, Johnson did a hell of a lot with this roster in one offseason and seems to be doing pretty good on the recruiting trail this year.

I’m not butthurt. I agree, Johnson did a good job this off season bringing in Berry, Cooper, and Reyzelman. I expect him to continue to recruit well, just like previous LSU coaches have done. That is an expectation here.
I think he’s done a good job so far. I said the other day that the only 2 things that I have a problem with are the defensive mistakes and the fact that there have been multiple extremely important games this year where the team has looked really bad and gotten embarrassed.

Yeah. This must be improved upon a good bit. There were times this season it was painful to watch games.
Posted on 5/30/22 at 7:11 pm to BallsEleven
I’m not ever going to expect a great defensive team based on his Arizona teams and the fact that he values hitting over fielding, and I’m ok with that. But there does need to be a lot of improvement. We can’t have a team this bad defensively again. That will absolutely keep us from winning a championship.

Considering he had 0 starting pitchers and dealt with some critical injuries, I’d say he did a pretty damn good job in year 1.
Posted on 5/30/22 at 7:15 pm to ipodking
Post less. Omaha is the standard. But you have to have the roster to get there and he didn’t inherit it and has just started his own recruiting.
Posted on 5/30/22 at 7:21 pm to JAB528
I don’t get where this “0 starting pitchers” comes from when he had a guy who was a successful Friday starter as a freshman who hadn’t lost a game in 2 years, who was 16-9 with 26 career starts left to him. You can argue about other starters if you want but saying he had “none” is incorrect.

Not saying I agree with ipodking because I don’t, but Schlossnagle took A&M from 9 SEC wins to a national seed in one offseason, so it’s not impossible. But that’s not normal. I think Jay did a good job of temporarily filling holes that were left on this team by bringing in Cooper and Reyzelman. If he continues to build on that I think we will be in Omaha in the next 2 years.

I definitely consider it a success. I am not looking at strictly wins and losses though. I look at how the team was managed. I like that he’s not afraid to make changes at any point at any spot in the lineup if it needs to be made. Him and Kelly also did an excellent job managing the bullpen we had this year. I think the future is bright
