Winning the NIT and winning secondary bowl games are pretty on par to me. I'd be marginally happy.

This team will lose in the 2nd round of the NIT to a San Diego State type team. Another disappointing year not in the real tourney.

Would I be happy with an NIT Championship? Hell yes.
It would go a long way toward easing the disappointment of not making the NCAA Tourney.
Reality doe, This team is not ready for the NCAA, (Consistency wise).
However, I think there is still a good chance they get picked, save for an epic melt down. The powers that be love the possibility of upsets, and LSU is an intriguing team in that regard.

I just want a reason to watch March Madness beyond as a casual observer. Give me two hours of giving a crap about the tournament beyond my office pool, I just want a spot at the dance.

Apples and Oranges, but No. we most likely had a decent year if we won the peach bowl or cotton bowl.
The NIT is equivalent to the independence bowl or no bowl for this age in LSU football.
