What does being an established runner have to do with it. You can't launch yourself and lead with the crown of the helmet. Pretty simple

I thought they were fishing. The problem is he led with the head.
Tackling a moving RB is difficult enough without silly targeting rules.

I was at the game and called it right after it happened. The guy next to me said, "what are you talking about?" They huddled and tossed him. You simply cannot lead with crown of the helmet and hit the other players helmet.

Your confusing NFL and NCAA rules.

Defenseless does not matter when leading with the crown of the helmet. I thought it was a good job of executing the rules. I did not notice the illegal hit in real time but in slow mo, the defender put the top of his head in DG's jaw. Looked scary and the proper call per the rules.

force-able contact to head or neck area with crown of helmet is always targeting.
Incidental contact with crown- no
force-able contact to head or neck area without crown (for a protected player)- no
force-able contact to head or neck area by any means to an unprotected player- yes

he used his head/helmet as a weapon.
If he hits Guice with his facemask instead of the crown of his helmet its not a penalty

He used the crown of his head.. its that simple and the rule is clear.. the reality is that the rule is in place to protect the offender as much as the runner.. nothing would have occurred had he not dipped his head

Everyone is all "let's hyper-examine a rule" and I'm more like "that really had to hurt considering that Guice was semi-questionable going into the game due to recovery from oral surgery." I couldn't help but notice that he was basically done after that series.

Also, it can now be a booth-initiated penalty. It no longer has to be flagged on the field then reviewed by the booth.

What was worse was Gilmore getting flagged for roughing the passer. Ridiculous

Yes - any followup on Guice today??
How much did he play after that hit?
Posted on 9/3/17 at 12:33 pm to The Baker
He lowered his head and hit with the crown of the helmet to the head. Defenseless or not, that's an automatic ejection.

Spearing has been illegal as long as i can remember. He launched the crown of his helmet at Guice.
