One of the dumbest things Les does is to continue to put up with kicking it out of bounds.

If I was Alleva I'd tell Les "next time the kickoff goes out of bounds, BDP can go on in the dressing room.

I imagine if you can start going the coffin Corner kick off relatively consistently it will be a advantage in net yards even with an out of bounds.

Not sure you know what coffin corner means, it only applies to punts

Seems like we risk 10 yards with an out of bounds penalty to gain 5 yards if we tackle them at the 20

That's not what happened. We gained 20 yards and lost 10. It worked out fairly well

Gamble was kicking everything to the back of the end zone as a true freshman. He's been taught how to kick out of bounds at the 6.

Same with growden. It's clear he can kick the ball 55 yards, but peveto and les thought punting 20 yards to the right might be the better play

Maybe you could enlighten me as to what it means

I feel like the general concept applies to our kick off strategy.

Coffin corner only applies punting when you kick it out of bounds inside the ten or so...

You're referring to directional kicking on kickoffs... they're trying to use the boundary as another defender... completely different

I checked on this..... and can confirm that Cameron was told to "not worry about trying to drop in the left corner. Just place it between the 3yd line and 3 yds deep."

They screw with this kid so bad. Recruited him because all through HS he launches the ball through the endzone.... the only thing he has ever known.... then they get him on campus and tell him to start landing the ball in a 6 yd zone, no longer than 3yds deep and on the left side of the left hash.

Hard to believe, but Les is overthinking the kicking game.

Do you really think this is how it works?

I'm not excusing this at all, but this isn't much different that your best pass rusher getting called for off-sides in a crucial situation, it's going to happen every now and then, but the benefits of his aggressiveness pays off much more.

In looking at kickoff coverage this year, LSU ranks 4th in the country in return average at 13.8 yards. There have been 2 penalties for kicks out of bounds, and 2 touchbacks. Of the other 10 kickoffs, the best starting field position was the 27. Average starting position is the 18.5. Factoring the penalties and touchbacks in, average is the 21-22 yard line. Given LSU's defense, this directly leads to better starting field position for the offense.

I'd also argue that the out of bounds kick vs. MSU was much more of a mistake by the kick returner, you never let a ball with that trajectory on a kickoff hit the ground inside the 10. The ball could have easily bounced the other way.

Bottom line is that an out of bounds kickoff is going to cost us a game one day. Bama '14 comes to mind.
No need to overthink something as simple as a touchback.

You can choose to believe him or not, but Les said they told Gamble to kick it out of the end zone in that case and he screwed up.

No matter what he said. You don't see other teams that do this on a regular basis, but it is a recurring problem at LSU.

Just fix it.

It isn't some fricking accomplishment that they only had ONE kickoff go out of bounds this game. It's an easily preventable occurrence that shouldn't happen more than, at most, once a year. LSU had multiple kickoffs go out of bounds last season. They've had it happen 2 of the first 3 games this season. In short, I doubt they are going to stop it. BDP and Miles believe in that approach.

Except for the coverage, LSU's special teams have been a joke, and it largely has nothing to do with the players. 2 of 3 games with a KO going out of bounds following a TD; 1 blocked extra-point and others that were very close to being blocked last game. The stupid rugby-approach to punting against Wisc. It took 3 games for LSU to realize you can line up 11 guys on the punting team everytime they go out.

I don't, but I personally wish they would, as it's a piece over the overall systematic dysfunction of the coaching staff that starts with Les Miles.
