Is he as good as stats indicate? Maybe not, but you don't know if you don't let him pitch enough to see.

I agree, but I don't know if the innings are still available this season.

Give him as long as he can go tomorrow night to start.

Who knows...he could be that ever elusive 4th starter.

We have a 4th starter. He's just currently more valuable as a reliever.

I think we might see Hess start in a tournament game if Lange, Poche, and Walker aren't available. He's been more consistent lately and can be used out of the pen or as a 4th starter.

You definitely will. Hess didn't get move from starting due to struggling. He got moved bc they needed him in bullpen. Proof CM doesn't care too much about mid week.

On his post-game radio show Saturday after the Auburn 9-1 game, Bill Franques asked Mainieri about the upcoming Northwestern game...who's pitching, any special plans, etc., and Mainieri said when he arrived at LSU Skip Bertman gave him some advice about mid-week games.

He said Bertman told him, "Don't be afraid to lose a mid-week game if it helps the team prepare for winning later is the season."

What Skip meant was use the mid-week games to learn who can be counted on and who can't when crunch time comes in important games.

I'd never heard that story and it told me two things: 1) Mainieri wants to win mid-week games but he wants to learn who he can depend on more, and, 2) He's been taking some heat about the 6 mid-week losses so used his post-game interview to explain his philosophy about mid-week games.

They are hitting over .100 better on Peterson.
I would rather see extended Reece.

Okay, but Mainieri has already said he's starting Peterson tomorrow night and he will let him go as long as he's effective.

It's not going to be 'pitch by committee' in tomorrow's game.

I heard them replay this on the radio this morning and it made me chuckle. He knows why he said it. Say something in Skip's name and the heat wears off.

The truth is that about half of our midweek losses were due to "seeing what you got" (UNO game 1, McNeese at least) and the other half our normal starters shite the bed. And I don't have a problem with those games we lose because we're seeing that Strall can't handle serious innings, Hess is a legit starter, etc. But the USA loss, for example, while not on PM imo, had nothing to do with "helping us prepare to win later in the season" and a couple of the other losses were just head-scratchers both in terms of coaching and execution.

Can this experiment be put on the shelf for this year. I don't see how anyone on the staff can have any confidence in Peterson to consistently throw strikes.

Gilbert and then to Bush. I have just developed a dislike of seeing Peterson run out there to just walk people and lit up. It seems like even when he is throwing ok he still has long innings. It seems like Peterson is always first man up to be given a chance no matter how bad his last outing was.

I agree with you, ell. When we were curbstomping the mid-week over half a decade, we didn't hear so much about the don't be afraid to lose. When Paul changed the Johnny Wholestaff approach this year, it was about preparing a starter for tournament play. When we got beat down in the mid-week, the first thing Paul did was 86 the starter grooming process and go back to Johnny Wholestaff.

The truth is Paul would like to win those games, too. We just haven't been great in the mid-week and it exposed our 2015 Arkansas-esque bullpen.

That said, hopefully we can keep up the hot play through TDA.

So you want them to give up on Peterson for the year? Wouldn't it be smarter to give him a chance to improve during a midweek game tomorrow and possibly gain another reliable arm out of the pen. I'm not confident in him either at this point but in a midweek game I say give him a shot.

Gilbert and Bush will likely throw tomorrow. Extending either one of them with the SEC west on the line this weekend is dumb as frick. Try again. Who would you start?

You think he'd be helpful as a starter in the post season?

Unknown.

Stats are awesome but not enough data points.
