Why is the QB position so hard to master?

Matt Flynn seemed to master the position best of any recent LSU QB. He did not have the arm of JR or Mett, but he knew how to manage the game which brought a NC. When I look at Bama and Florida State I see the same challenges of coaching up a kid to be a good game manager. Why is it so hard to find a good game manager at QB?
Are there any ex QB's that frequent this board that can bring informed intelligent comments to this topic?

Craig Nall here
Playing QB for a D1 school isn't as easy at it looks

Nope.

It's one of the most complex positions to pick up in all of sports and everything happens in about 2 seconds. It's not really that hard to see why it's so hard to be good at it at a high level.

FSU has a game manager? Dude won the Heisman.
Takes time to develop a QB. QB's need reps to develop. LSU has been terrible getting the back up QB in game reps under CLM.

reading defenses is hard. its probably the biggest change from high school and college. defenses do everything they can to hide what they coverage they are playing or which blitz's are coming. its a tough position to play mentally.

And this is just flat out wrong. In Flynn's last game in Tiger Stadium he was booed multiple times going into half time. That's how bad he was at times and that was in a championship year.

If Perrilloux doesn't get tossed, we don't even discuss this. The Jefferson/Lee era has created a false narrative. Take out the JJ/JL era. LSU has had
Jamarcus-great college QB
Flynn-solid college QB
Mett-solid college QB
If Perrilloux stays, we have maybe 1-2 years of JJ/JL.
That means in 8 of the 10 years under Miles, LSU would have fielded a good QB. People are just soured because of Jefferson and Lee and they lose perspective.

That 07 defense bailed Flynn out of some games that year. Mett had the best season since Jamarcus left.

Look...I really like/d Matt Flynn...but would this myth please die already?
Flynn presided over an offense that was worse than the previous year's. There are reasons outside of his own doing, of course...namely losing his top two receivers. On the other hand, he benefited from an actual running game which we did not have the year before.
But in terms of winning the championship, where he really benefited was helming the LSU team in a year where a two loss team could miraculously make it to the NCG. Other than having played well as the QB when LSU destroyed VT earlier in the year, the biggest reason LSU got to play for the title were do to games that LSU did not even play in on Championship Weekend. Twice while the #1 team in the country a Matt Flynn lead LSU team lost to pretty mediocre teams...once at home with what felt like everything on the line. That game ended, literally, with a pick he threw. Did anyone leave Tiger Stadium that night feeling great about how awesomely Matt Flynn had lead LSU essentially knowing LSU was now out of the title hunt?
He was hurt the next week as Periloux guided the team in Atlanta.
I hate pointing this stuff out...I really do. But I REALLY hate revisionism. Matt Flynn was a solid QB on a really good team that got lucky to have played in a season when their 2 losses were not enough to bump them from the NCG and they/he took advantage of that...and for that I'll forever ne grateful as an LSU fan.
But pretending LSU won the NC in 2007 because of some miraculous QB mojo responsible to Flynn is crazy talk.

This....big time. We sometimes struggle against lesser competition, so the starters have to stay in the game until late. If the backup QB gets any playing time at all, he's just handing the ball off.

Bama just lost one after having him 3 years Some of you people are ridiculous.

Right, and that 2 seconds is after the snap. If you have a good OL that 2 seconds becomes 3 which is a world of difference.
This is not even mentioning the pre-snap reads that are required.

This is a bit of a change of topic...but considering the actual topic I don't feel that bad...but I think the best at working in back up QB's was Spurrier at UF. Fans of other schoolls would give him shite for running the score p on them, but he'd almost always be doing it with backups. The difference is that when his back QB would go in, he'd actual run the full offense and try to score. That way, when it WAS his turn, the guy would have real world experience to draw on.
I hated getting rolled by those teams, but I always respected that approach.

actually the 2 losses we had in 07 came when we scored 37 and 48 points. our defense wasnt that great in 07 compared to other years. the d did step up some against auburn and florida. perriloux needed em to step up in the seccg.
flynn is also the only one to have any success in the nfl, albeit marginal.

We are not BAMA...we don't want game managers. We want star QB's who are explosive and when you have a QB like that, it is big for recruiting other offensive positions as well.
