We never enjoy a season we always find that one thing to bitch about or act like we know things that we don't know.

Enjoy it all this season and next season do the same thing !

Saying I am on board with you guys thinking the back-up should get as much in game as possible when any game allows it. As you watch SEC games the coaches must not see it that way. None of them do it !!

our fans are pretty bad, but its also common among most programs.

Bama fans wont shut up about Tua.

We will always be a game manager type program

The truth is we have had consistently sub par QB play for 9 years and are waiting for someone to actually play winning QB play

Yep.

They were on the radio going off about it after the LSU game.

But to answer the OP question. The discussion of the 2nd string guy for ANY team is typically directly related to how much confidence the 1st stringer's performance generates.

And, well, let's just say LSU's starter hasn't generated much confidence in a very long time.

But, if you think about it, it isn't as if people were clamoring for Jennings during Mett's Senior season.

A combination of below avg qb play, bad qb coaching, and conservative play calling.
Etling is not as bad as most think, but since the backups were highly recruited some fans believe the backups are better right now. Fans need to be more patient.

.

Fan expectation of an LSU QB is generally disproportionate to the players skill level. We want Heisman numbers from our starter and when he invariably fails, we are absolutely convinced the backup is capable of putting up those numbers.

Because we said for years that all we needed was a game manager.

We won 2 MNC's with game managers.

Then ... this stat-line just is not good enough:

quote:

D. Etling
11-16
217 YDS
2 TD

And ... don't get me wrong ... Etling has made mistakes and could play better.

FALSE, give us a qb like matt Flynn and LSU is much better. I don't think it's over expecting for a team like lsu to get a decent qb. They have all the talent they need to win big, but for the past decade has missed on qb prospects.....that's an issue

I agree a Matt Flynn could survive without the continual fan scrutiny. However a great deal of that was due to our taking the title his senior year. The same Matt Flynn with a couple of additional loses would have been tossed under the bus by this fan base.

The reference to wanting Heisman numbers was an intended exaggeration.

It's not just LSU fans that act like this. This is common throughout college football if the starter struggles.

Because 1st string QB is not often talked about in a positive light here.
I think te backup QB talk stopped the year Mett was the man. If 1st string QB is on point, no one will care.

In 2002, everybody was saying put in Randall during VT game.

In 2012, everybody wanted Jennings after Mett threw some picks.

In 2008, Lee wasn't allowed to go through growing pains to prepare for the next year like they claim they are willing to give Brennan. We had to put in Jefferson.

Because for a decade (minus one obvious season) we haven’t had solid play from that position. The bigger question should be why can’t LSU do what so many other programs do and recruit and develop quarterbacks.

The only fanbase in America happy with their QB is the NE Patriots. Other than that, they all want the second string on the field.

Because unless your QB is Tom Brady there is room for improvement and fans always wanna see if the next guy is better rather than letting coaches make that assessment. We haven't had solid QB play in so long that it's just a given that the next guy is probably better.

You guys understand this isn't some new phenomenon, right? There were guys calling for Mickey Guidry to get more playing time wile Tommy Hodson was ALL-SEC 4 straight years. and that was a guy that was already getting a scripted series in each half.

This has nothing to do with the quality of QB play and everything to do with people simply being unhappy with whatever toys they have in front of them regardless of how nice they are.

In short, a segment of fans (not just LSU) can never be fully happy.
