That isn't entirely accurate. You still identify the zone blocking schemes presnap, and who/where the mike is plays an important role in that.
ETA: by zone blocking schemes, i mean that you usually have tandem blocks. Two for two. Depending on the d's alignment, that could be a guard/center guard/tackle tandem, and then identifying which two bodies you are responsible for presnap.

What games are you watching? I see pointing all of the time. There is also a lot of verbal communication that we can not hear. There is more communication going on than you think.

RBs, but the main point I was making is that its more of a verbal communication that we as fans don't hear, and its not always the qb communicating that.
Where I played, it was on the center to get all the blocking assignments ironed out presnap. Qb had ability to override if he saw something else that the center couldn't/didn't.

Usually the center actually delegates the assignments, unless a different play or protection needs to be called. This way the QB can focus a little more on the defense as a whole, since he should know where his blockers should be.
This is at least how they do it in the pros, pretty sure I've seen it in college though

Yeah the center is an under appreciated position. Kind of like the catcher in baseball. I always thought it cool when the QBs pointed at defenders like manning does but I never thought much about why some QBs do it more than others. Seems like the RB should be able to make those reads himself anyway.

We've been lucky that the only true road game we had was at Mississippi State. (I don't think Syracuse was that loud) I don't think that they will be able to hear each other at Bama or Ole Miss
