because running into a screener is not a charge.

Why doesn't a 3 pointer count as 5 points?

It maxes out at four unless it causes a technical.

He was playing defense!

Really?

A charge is an offensive foul. When a charge is called, it means that an offensive player has made significant contact with a defender that has an established position.

Well...the first reason is that Wheeler was on defense when the play occurred

Is that called reserved for ball handlers only?

A charge is an offensive foul. You can't commit a "charge" on defense

No. You do not have to have possession of the ball.

The individual player does not have to have possession of the ball. But the team does. Charging is an offensive foul.

The OP should not have mentioned charging, but why can’t a foul be called? You can’t run full speed into a stationary screener. It should be a foul, right?

Looking at the play he didn’t run into our guy at full speed. Actually it doesn’t even look like it was that big of a collision.

I have no idea of why he got his bell rung unless he had a preexisting issue.

OK, he ran into Efton at half speed. Why does that matter? If player A on defense, runs directly into player B, on offense, who is standing still, it should be a foul. Doesn’t matter if player B is setting a screen or not. You can’t run into a player on the other team without fouling. What am I missing?

The fact that if they called a game that tight you’d never finish.

Tell me the logic of calling a foul on a player who is knocked out on the floor...

Think about what you are asking. Almost every screen involves contact by the screened player, have you ever seen the defender called for a contact foul outside of one trying to purposely bust through the screen?
Also think of having your team set a pick like the one in question here and your ball handler goes up for the game winning shot to beat the buzzer only to have a non shooting floor foul called to take the points off the board...

As a former official (years ago so the rule might have changed), charging is a player control foul. So the offending player would need to be in possession of the ball. If a player not in possession runs over a defender, then it would be a push type foul. This really only matters if the offended team is in a bonus situation. There are no FT’s on charge/player control fouls.

But you NEVER have a charge by a defensive player. I guess you could call a foul on a defensive player for running into a screen, but I would think there would need to be more to it than what happened Tuesday.

I think most of you aren't understanding the OP asked why WHEELER wasn't called for charging.

Wheeler plays for Kentucky and was on offense.

He OP didn't ask why Elton wasn't called for blocking.

So now I (unsarcastically) want to know too. Can you not get a charging if you're setting a screen (by rule)? I know you don't have to be in the act of shooting (or even in possession of the ball) to be called. Elton was set. Do you have to be near the basket?
