St. Amant grad, went to ULM. Eventually #10 overall pick in MLB draft. 4 time MLB all-star.

I guess I'm thinking of someone else.
Smoke and his Nachos must have gotten to him

He hates LSU.
Really, I don't know.

Maybe Andy Sheets said bad things...
Seriously, though, I don't know. Looking at the 1996 team, there were a couple of great arms, but most of the pitchers were hardly world-beaters in terms of talent. By the mid-90's, young pitchers were in very high demand by the MLB (in part because the Rockies and Marlins started playing in 1993), and college quality generally suffered.

Yeah, but he didn't skip college. He just chose to NOT go to the nation's best college baseball program that was in his home state. Maybe competition in college? Or was he not as highly regarded out of highschool as I thought he was?

if memory serves, he improved in size and velocity after HS

Ben Sheets didn't pitch much at St. Amant because of injury. He was probably not seriously recruited by LSU. I saw him in the summer after his senior year throwing in the 90's, but he had already signed with ULM at that point. I also remember that one of the baseball magazines had this ranking for his junior year in college:
best college fastball: Ben Sheets, ULM
best college curveball: Ben Sheets, ULM
best college fastball: Ben Sheets, ULM
best college curveball: Ben Sheets, ULM

was he big time in high school? LSU was getting everyone they wanted at that time. I would imagine he really came into his own at ULM.

yeah, thats probably it. He is still really injury prone. But when he is healthy there are very few that throw it better.

Guys got family in Monroe and wanted to follow in the footsteps of the great Terry Matthews.

Sheets wasn't even the best pitcher on his team coming out of STA
