Nobody wants to sign a douche bag punter. He is the real reason for the shadys fight.

If he was the reason for the shadys fight then he helped the team. JJ wasn't winning all those games Jlee did.

He gets his room and board paid for by teams who want to practice fielding punts from a left footed punter. Heard he is all tatted up too. Will end up st coach for a high school.

Pretty good article. Wing was an outstanding talent as a punter and had some inconsistency problems in 2012. Overcoming those problems requires dedication and hard work, and by all reasonable accounts he wasn't willing to do that at the time. Maybe he is now.

To answer the original question, the difference in YPP between the greatest and a perfectly good punter is not enough, compared to the risks of taking on a head case. Reliability is the key factor.

Wing wasn't a great punter. Your short life hasn't seen great I guess. He had one great year and was inconsistent the next. He was an a-hole and left for being stupid. He couldn't beat out Donnie Jones at Philly who was also an LSU punter. He ran a fake punt for a TD and got it called back. That's what he is known for. Let it go. He isn't gonna win a job by being a dick.

He was incredible in 2011. He was inconsistent in 2012. And he wasn't even all that inconsistent. He spent most of the A&M game punting into a stiff wind. (Which is when everyone's bitching peaked around town).

No one is wrong by saying he's a great punter. Him being a douche doens't make him a bad punter.

Watch the West Virginia game or the SECCG. Not to mention his punt from his own endzone against Alabama that saved the game midway in the 4th.

he was the most inconsistent punter i have seen on the field at LSU in 20 years. He did hit some marvelous punts, but he was automatic for at least 1 shank per game.

I don't know what team you were watching. I believe he had more punts killed inside the 20 than anybody I can remember. In 2011 he had a net 6 yds returned against him... That's insane! He did have some pretty dam good gunners though.

What's the problem with those? Those are close to what he was trying to do.

He got his attitude from his dad. Big head, dreams of money, everyone and everything beneath him. Thought the NFL would lay out the red carpet. LSU just a steppingstone. Now he'd be lucky to keep a job selling phones at AT&T.

Kessler
That's a much better question. Why did Chad Kessler not have a better pro career? He left school with the all-time record for punt average. Yes, I know we had Witten for short kicks, but....

Okay. I think I just answered my own question.

Then again, the player whose college record he beat, Reggie Roby, also had a designated pooch kicker on his team, but he had a solid pro career.

Because Chad had a few things going for him that helped his stats. As pointed out, there was a different pooch punter. Most of Chad's punts landed from 35-45 yards out...he had many fair catches in that range. He had a few long fair catches too....but he had the largest number of 35-40 yard punts get a 20 yard roll that I've ever seen.

He was obviously good...but not 50.3 good....a lot of things came together to make that stat and his all American selection.

Having Morris Claiborne and Ron Brooks covering on punts and running down to the goal line to catch kicks worked to his advantage. Those were once in a career cover guys. I've wondered if their talent is what made Wing successful in 2011?

Other than the Oregon game and the alabama game, i think overall he hurt us more than he helped us. the NFL doesnt care if you CAN hit a good punt, ot kick a long field goal, they want to make sure you can do it every time.

Did you jump on the bandwagon this year, or are you just making shite up?

Up until the BCS game, he gave up 1 yard per return. 1. Let that sink in.
