I am 90%+ sure that's what they did - the place went nuts, but then again, it was always nuts for hoops back then.

I remember those days well. I remember the students giving Kyle Macy hell. When we were in the final four in Philadelphia Mike the Tiger was on our plane going up to Philly. I always suspected he was the trombone player from the pep band and that flight confirmed it. I felt sorry for the few people on the flight who weren't LSU fans. It was awesome!!

Kind of a thread hijack...but why does Mike run and throw himself at the goal post during the football games? I always that it was borderline retarded and only funny in a WTF kind of way

Didn't they once have the fake Mike repel down with the real Mike when he was a cub? I think it was when Mike V was taking over Mike IV, but I am admittedly sketchy on this. It would have been in the late 80's or early 90's.

They had Mike V on a leash at a bball game to introduce him. They sure as hell didnt have him come down from the ceiling. Lsu has a chance to make this great. Hopefully they don't screw it up like last year.

Who remembers Mark Jeffers (he played the role of Mike back in the day) getting in trouble with the SEC for mocking the refs by wearing a ref shirt, dark glasses and using a cane to feel in front of him during a game????

Absolutely. And is this "wishful remembering" or didn't the band play "Three Blind Mice" to accompany?

Could you imagine if they lowered the REAL Mike the Tiger from the rafters?? The place would go nuts!

IIRC, they did!! (I just saw that someone else had posted about that incident before I did and I didn't see it- sorry about that!)

He was always very much into his role....

"They had Mike V on a leash at a bball game to introduce him."

That makes more sense. I am probably remembering Mike coming down from the rafters with the cub already on the floor? A great time but time has fuzzied the edges of that memory.

This is what I remember him being suspended over. Joe B. Hall use3d to get livid over fan abuse in the PMAC.

In the early 90s I was in the ROTC and can confirm it was a cadet back then. A lot of our cadets are Airborne and Air Assault qualified, not to mention we had the awesome rappel tower back then that we practiced on all the time. And yes, he was a Raider for those who know.

Best mascot ever. That dude was huge too, he fit very naturally into that costume. his sister was in Tiger Band with me in the 80s...he was already gone by then, but I had seen him at FB games.

My dad used to do this. He saw this thread being shared on Facebook and sent the link to me because he thought I might post. See quotes below for his comments:

quote:

It is very cool to read these comments.  It’s funny how the truth is somewhere in the middle of all of that.

Facts are: a State Trooper did it for a couple of years, I believe 81&82, I did it from 83-93.  In 94 and 95 or 96, the ROTC group did it until the kid burned his hand real bad.  That was the last time it was done as a rappel.  I believe, from the later comments in the article, they lowered someone in a slow descent.  One time, we lowered a manikin in a Kentucky basketball uniform about half way.  The crowd was booing so loud… until we cut the rope.  The manikin hit the floor and broke apart.  Then, Mark Jeffers, the real mascot at that time (and the best and most controversial, in my opinion (blind ref skit was his idea)), came across the court with a big dust mop and swept the pieces off of the court.  The crowd went wild!  The comment about upside down, really fast (almost a free fall) and flipping at the last minute is true.  I did that a few times.

Before any detectives say anything about MSG's post earlier, yes, he's my cousin.
