Redshirt rules are complicated. Kids can play at the beginning of the year as long as they play in seven quarters or less. If they play in eight quarters they lose there redshirt. That's why they try to get the kids PT early in the year then they shut them down unless injury calls.

I thought once you played; you couldn't redshirt.. unless you got injured of course. but otherwise this 7 qtr thing is new to me

I agree. I think the rule says has not played, but the injury hardship rule is about playing less than two games, so I assume this is somehow related to the injury rule.

some schools have already updated their rosters with that info; but not LSU. that's what kinda prompted my thread

All teams play a few guys early at the end of games that end up being red shirts. The strict rule is if you play a snap you have played that year, but exceptions are made on injuries. Clearly many of these players weren't injured and still get a red shirt. If the teams aren't abusing the rule, the red shirt is granted. At least that is my understanding.
