He was the defensive coordinator for a couple of years under Dinardo, formerly head coach at Illinois??? or another big ten school. He brought the idea of a "drop" backer with his defense, sort of like a rover. LSU did not have the personnel to run it and his defenses were terrible. He was a nice and decent guy but woefully unprepared to face SEC offenses and left before Dinardo did.

in the late 90s a man by the name of Dinardo, seemed to start a revival in LSU football... He eventually hired Lou Tepper as defensive coordinator... everything fell apart and Dinardo was gone.

Saban then came in... We win national title

Miles comes in we continue hot streak.

Lou Tepper indirectly made LSU football a powerhouse through his suckage.

He's the DC who got Gerry Dinardo fired. Dinardo refused to fire Tepper and so he got axed.

Remember that one game Quincy Carter looked like Joe Montana?

That was against Tepper.

Tepper was Illinois' coach, and got canned. Dinardo hired him and things went down hill from there. See also Michigan and Robinson at DC this year. Same shite.

go watch the LSU Georgia game from 1998. He made Quincy Carter look like a Heisman trophy winner.

was he really that much worse than Willie Martinez? I didn't know that amount of suckage was possible.

yes. though terribleness aside, his D actually improved some in his 2nd yr. but our offense was arguably worse than it is this yr.

"It's going to take about 4 years to successfully install this defense."

He is proof that the Big Ten and SEC are completely different leagues.

He used Thomas Dunson and Jamaal Hill, both of whom MIGHT have run 4.85 40's, as drop linebackers - destroying their careers. Dunson was a 4 star top 10 prospect out of Texas. He was made to play a physical, run-stopping MLB and by the time Tepper got a hold on him, he was a defensive player who would go into the trash bin talks along with players like Aaron Damond and Abram Booty. Dunson may have not been NFL material, but he was totally misused by Tepper, to the point where he just looked lost in games. He ended up, by the Kentucky game, losing his starting job in '99 and that's when the Faulk, James, and Jeremy Lawrence 3some began - all as freshmen.

Tepper was the downfall of DiNardo, yes. DiNardo had 3 winning seasons and was fired not even to the end of his fifth. He would have gotten one more year and possibly would still be LSU's coach had he never even brought Tepper aboard. Funny how Carl Reese can totally make/break a head coach.

Also, Tepper's first official game was the Independence Bowl vs. Notre Dame. LSU won that game 27-9 and people were quick to say that "the new DC" is going to make a lot of difference.

Tepper's writing on the wall was when LSU gave up over 400 yards of offense to Idaho. The following week, Quincy Carter destroyed us - completing 91 percent of his passes and defeating what was the #6 and title-hopeful Tigers. The next week, LSU lost to Florida (on horrible officiating) and then perhaps the worst defensive meltdown in LSU history at that time as Tim Couch raped LSU on UK's final drive. That made LSU 4-3 and losing three in a row.

DiNardo and Reese would do a masterful job in defeating eventual SEC west champs Mississippi State 41-6. At 5-3 and total domination of a top 25 team, things looked like they might get back on track for the 1998 Tigers - 3 loss regular season not being shunned at completely. LSU, meanwhile, just could not buy a break during the rest of that season. Tepper's D was destroyed by Ole Miss, but the offense mounted a comeback and got the game to overtime - losing, nonetheless. LSU's offense ran and threw on Notre Dame, but the defense could not stop Jarrius Jackson co. and that was the game that gave LSU 6 losses. The Tigers would also drop a heartbreaker to a bad Bama squad and lost the game after having a 2 possession lead with just a few minutes left in the game. Robert Davis was burned twice by Andrew Zow. While Davis is to blame, perhaps DiNardo and Tepper should have been in a differnt defense instead of man coverage (or it might have just been cover 3).

At the end of '98, with LSU at 4-6, we went to Fayetteville and got drummed by Arkansas as Craig Nall started for Herb Tyler.

The '98 team was supposed to win the west and play Tennessee in Atlanta. They weren't far from doing it and had an offense that averaged over 30 ppg and nearly 400 ypg. Blown out only in the last game of the season without their starting qb and any chance at the postseason, '98 LSU was what it was because of poor defensive play. 1999 would be even worse as the offense disappeared also. Tepper's 2 years and 1 game career at LSU were awful. Saban might have been more pissed off in his first year of any, as he was obviously trying to erect what Tepper had basically fricked up. I'll never forget watching the 2000 Miss State game replay and Saban absolutely blew up on the sidelines at Robert Davis in the first half.
