What does Obama have to do with Southern's band?

Then LSU fans wonder why Brando make stupid comments. I'm like you, what does Obama have to do with Southern's Band. Obama isn't from the south, hardly visits the south, probably could care less about a school like SOUTHERN since he went to an IVY league school.lol.

I'm sorry, but Southern's band sucks. Yeah, they're a good show to watch, but musically they are horrendous for many reasons.
Brass not entering at the same time, or hitting the notes together as one sound.
Embouchure problems causing many of the instruments to squeal.
Lots of flat notes all over the place.
One of Southern's problems is their arrangements. I don't know who does the arrangements of the music, but it's just down right terrible. I know they're supposed to be a "human jukebox", but it's obvious that the emphasis is on the ease to recognize the song that's played, and not on making the music sound good.
Listening to LSU's band, there's a reason why The Golden Band From Tigerland won the Sudler Trophy. They perform as a single unit, instead of a bunch of different instruments who happen to be playing the same song.

Great points. But here's the thing.
Most people in the crowd don't care about Sudler trophies and whatnot. They want a band that makes them want to move. In my opinion, both bands serve that purpose well. The general public could care less what musicians think, honestly. Only musicians care about all the stuff you mentioned

True. People like Southern's Band because they dance and play popular R&B and hip hop songs. I've NEVER heard of anyone liking their fight song or other schools songs.
So I'll say LSU's band is better.

anyone else think neck is getting old?
Posted on 2/26/09 at 2:31 pm to bayou2003
One major difference between the two is that Southern plays a much larger variety of music, their performance at a game is rarely predictable. The last few years LSU has pretty much stuck to the same ten songs.

"Neck"=most overplayed song
"Neck" is to LSU what "Rocky Top" is to Tenn

Having played in a "black" band I understand the difference between LSU and Southern's versions. LSU's band is much more technical and precise while Southern's brass have but one intent when they play, to blow as loud as humanly possible.
Black bands use their sound level as the determining factor in band battles while LSU goes more for quality than quantity.

<~ LSU School of Music Graduate, Class of 2006.
LSU has their 10 or so songs that they regularly play. I'd rather hear the same 10 songs (give or take an added one every year) played REALLY WELL, than hear the latest hit single being played by a sub-par musical unit. I remember in 2005, the SU band actually played "Laffy Taffy" at the Bayou Classic. That's two freaking notes practically the entire song!!
I can't stand watching an HBC football game for two reasons: the football isn't great (hell, even watching Div-II football is more entertaining), and the band plays THE ENTIRE GAME. Of course they have to play the entire game, they have to take the attention ff the terrible football being played. The latter would be at least manageable if the band was actually good.

The song sucks, no matter who plays it.
It's a sad day when LSU is playing Southern songs...and comparisons are being made. LSU is in a different league altogether and should play tunes that fit its stature.
Leave "Neck" to the SWAC bands.
