yeah.. i thought and said this in the 90's when US made their biggest world cup push yet and MLS started. 15 years later. pretty much the same. still no local college team other than clubs. that i did play for.
how about soccer works on hockey before trying to overtake the NBA.
some even say lacrosse is growing in popularity as well.

pro teams are getting bigger and nicer stadiums.
very possible that pro soccer will easily overtake nba first and slowly nibble away at baseball.
Soccer is more boring than baseball.

Ok, soccer still sucks
Better worry about that quidditch crap taking you over, because I would imagine that it's more entertaining than soccer.

Currently, LSU has the minimum number of sports that are required for Division 1-A schools. Ohio State has twice as many sports as LSU, but I don't see LSU ever having that many sports because every one of the other sports lose money.

Clueless dork factor unusually high on this thread.

watching games are boring... However playing soccer is a lot of fun
And this is it in a nutshell. If you haven't noticed the trends in most of the major sports in America, the driving force I would say is the television dollar. Hell, I can't really stand to watch a soccer game now. 45 minute halves, with NO STOPPAGES (Injuries, cards, penalites, PENALTY KICKS!!!) and no breaks but half time. It makes for difficult TV viewing, especially if you don't have any sort of connection to it already. (Plus I can't watch Arsenal matches whenever- I have a life ) So if American soccer can find a way to make itself a more attractive TV sport, it may increase it's popularity more quickly. Until then, GRIDIRON football is king, and the money sport.

Soccer was meant for the 3rd world.

This statement is just ignorant on a number of levels.

Here's my take on it:
My son plays high school soccer and I love to watch it. I also enjoy watching the U.S. national teams (both mens and womens). EPL teams and national teams outside of the US I enjoy if I can develop a rooting interest for one of the teams.
Bottom line is I think it's one of those sports where you need a rooting interest (at least for people here in the US who were not raised on it).
It's a very popular sport with the kids. You pass by Burbank park on most weekends I think you're likely to see a game during a large portion of the year. But it hasn't progressed to the point of high popularity either in colleges or even MSL teams.
I think the high school soccer scene is progressing with a lot of traditional football/baseball public schools developing good soccer programs. But it is still pretty much a sport where a few elite private schools tend to dominate the final rounds of the playoffs.

I've been hearing this for 30 years.

My sons play high school soccer. Before that I had a hard time watching a match. Now I enjoy it better than baseball, except for LSU baseball. Soccer is growing but not very fast.
I think if they made the goals bigger thus creating more scoring the game would be better recieved in the states. Basketball is more exciting to watch but the NBA has done a poor job of marketing their product.
Bottom line LSU is not getting a mens soccer team any time soon.

I find it hilarious that people are "rolling around laughing" at the notion that the most popular sport in the world is "gaining popularity" in America
