What's LSU's record with best team in country

I know LSU is undefeated in the championship game, 6-0.
But what's LSU's record of winning the NC when they had the BEST team in the country. For instance, were there years under Maineri or Bertman when they had the best team but didn't win it.

It's a championship series now... we will never again win the championship game... it's not done that way now..

2009 was game 3, so it was a championship game.

That 1998 team was primed and in the driver's seat to make the run for the three-peat. They were 2-0 with easy wins over USC & Miss. State and looked to be cruising.

They were ranked #1 to start the season in '09 if I remember correctly...

Technically they are 7-1. 5-0 for 91,93,96,97 and 00. 2-1 in 09.
