What would signing Malik Newman mean for Keith Hornsby's role?

While it would be another scorer on the team, I think both would work harmoniously. I'll tell you they wouldn't know who to guard on a last second shot with Blakeney, Newman, Simmons and Hornsby on the court at once...

Less minutes obviously. However, he is probably LSU's most intelligent player and a guy you have to have on the court in crunch time. Plus, he's a good rebounder and defender. Those two aspects are going to be just as if not much more important to LSU next season. Especially with the complete unknown that is the frontcourt (Simmons is a great offensive wing, but can he control the glass and paint on defense? Hopefully Victor can, but when will he become eligible?)

Ultimately he's a guy that has proven he can give you double figures every night and will play hard. I think Jones probably trusts him more than anyone on the team. He probably wouldn't play 30mpg with Newman on the team, but he would a big part of LSU's success next year.

I'd probably just try to guard all of them but I'm no basketball coach

Just note, no one in college basketball has ever said, "shite we have too many guards."

It would likely mean that a guard would get more minutes at the 3. Probably Quarterman. It would also lower the minutes of Jalyn Patterson and Gray.

Well of course you TRY to guard them all, but if you have multiple screens, you have to decide who is worth switching extra defenders on and who isn't. If every player on the court is a threat to hit a game winner, it really forces every single defender to play excellent defense. One breakdown and a great shot can be had.

While they are different positions, and I agree with you that Hornsby will likely start, even if Malik joins, the addition would have a substantial affect on his PT. We have Patterson, Gray, and Quarterman who are all combo guards who can play point guard or off guard so Malik taking PG minutes would push some of those other guys into the rotation of off guard.

Gray will be pulling splinters out his arse but I agree the rest of the guards playing will reduce pt for everyone. Although I think we will be a 3 guard team most of the time next year. Too many good guards not to be on the floor at the same time.

Totally agree. Hornsby's senior leadership and role of being Mr. Hustle will be invaluable for the Tigers next season, regardless of whether Newman is part of the squad or not. Hornsby, Blakeney and Patterson form a pretty deadly triangle of shooters as well.

A scenario I see happening over and over again is Simmons with the ball at the top of the key. Someone gives him a pick to free him up and he drives for the basket. Everyone leaves their man to stop him. At least two players in the wings have wide open three's and Simmons will get them the ball no problem.

We ran a play to Martin a few times this year where he curls off two screens and gets the ball near the shoulder with his weight going to the basket. I could see similar being done to Simmons but with more options available to him so he can pass to an open shooter if he doesn't have the lane.

If LSU doesn't get a little creative with out of bounds plays next year with all the shooters we will have, I will be disappointed.

I know Newman was probably nervous in the McDonalds All Star Game and everybody (besides Simmons who was distributing) is looking to get theirs.

So I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he is what they say, cause I saw none of it that day. He was o-7 with a couple of bad turnovers and generally didn't look like the No. 4 rated player.

I'll watch again this weekend as he's playing with Simmons and Blankeny this time.

Giving Hornsby less minutes may be the dumbest fricking JJ could do.
