I’m not sure why Gio is getting written off so easily. The dude is a player and being hurt this entire season sucks for him. I would really like him to come back and have a full season next year - can’t teach his speed out in CF and despite the rants opinion, he is a good hitter.
I want him here next year and I think he'll be a starter but I'm saying it wouldn't surprise me if he signed or went somewhere else if we can't guarantee to keep his current scholarship amount. Has nothing to do with playing time or NIL.

Why does Sanford transfer? Safford yes. But why Sanford?
If it's fall practice and Crews, DiGiacomo, Dugas, Bianco are all still here and Pearson makes it to campus how much playing time is he realistically going to get?

Hell, he hit a game winning run in less than a month ago. Guy has been hurt. I hope he heals up in the off season and returns next year.

Who is a better CFer than a healthy Gio? Who hits better when he’s healthy? Not many.

There are probably several that need to go elsewhere.
On the other hand, I think there are a handful of players we have that will show dramatic improvement with coaches to properly develop them. Baseball is different than other sports as far as athletic ability. Some of the best baseball players are not great athletes, but highly skilled and have extreme confidence in their ability to perform. Our players did not play with the confidence that LSU players of the past have shown.

Gio may be a scholarship money casualty. Can’t spend money on a guy who is a backup defense specialist or pinch runner.
A backup defensive specialist who hits over .300? WTF are you talking about? Gio is a first rate SEC starter IF he can stay healthy. He's productive at the plate and covers a ton of ground in the outfield.

I could see that happening, but I can also see Johnson reviving his career. It could go either way.

quote:That’s a bit of a stretch probably based on his small sample average in 2020. He can be a solid enough SEC starter with his experience and some improvement under Johnson’s approach, especially surrounded by what should be a good lineup around him. But calling him first rate would be based on something he hasn’t shown yet.

I’m sure our 5ft nothing player won’t be back

My comment on backup for gio was in reply to someone who hoped he stayed in that role. If coach thinks he is good enough to play then good. But poster hoped
He stayed as a backup defensive specialist and pinch runner. In that specific role it is hard to keep scholarship money on that. If gio can stay healthy he has a chance to be a good cf player.
The point I was making was with 11.7 scholarships you have to be particular and spend wisely. I have no idea the money gio gets if any. If coach thinks he can start and contribute he stays.

I would really like to see what CJJ could do with Beloso. If CJJ is the hitting sensei we all think he is, then I would love to see what he could do with Beloso

lol Gio is far from average, dude can cover 70% of the outfield

He doesn’t track balls all that well

He spends more time injured than on the field

Centerfield in Omaha is a vast wasteland. Need someone who can chase down those fly balls to the gap.
