SLU people have been saying it for a long time. Hammond is actually a pretty cool place.

My youngest son played football there. It's just a thing. Small town America with a college.

Crossroads of the South, motherfricker!
There used to be a sign off of 1-12, north of Hammond Square mall, right next to the RR tracks before Downtown that said something like:
Hammond, America
Crossroads of the South
It was a source of amusement everytime my friends and I saw it.
