What is going to happen in 2014 with the introduction of the mini playoff when all the teams who are ranked at the top are from the SEC? (or any year after that)

Is it going to be conference champions only? Are they going to restrict the teams to 2 per conference?

Have they even announced it? I'm sure the info is out there I just haven't seen it.

it's going to be a clusterfrick...

quote:

"Nothing in this is final," Hancock said. "But some of the leading suggestions so far include that every conference would be represented on the committee (and) that there may be additionally some at-large members. The number I think we're talking about is somewhere in the 15-20 range.

"There will be recusals to prevent conflicts, just like we have in the (NCAA) basketball committee, so the committee size will have to be large enough to accomodate those recusals.

"We will obviously make sure the committee has ample resources to do its job."

Who will be on the committee?

"Football people," Hancock said. "They will use their expertise and good old fashioned common sense. None of this is set in stone, but I know they will use records, strength of schedule, head-to-head, results against common opponents, all those common sense things that we'd all expect the group to look at."

Hancock said he expects the bulk of the committee to be current administrators in schools and conferences. He also added that the 'mechanics' of figuring out the selection committee will likely be finalized next summer.

They have not announced if there will be a limit on the number of schools per conference. I really think that they will limit it to 2 per conference. Last Year SEC would have had 3 teams and this year at least 2.

They have not announced all of the details, yet.

What we do know is: After the conference championship games a committe will determine the top 4 teams to make the playoffs.

Conference champions do not get a guaranteed spot.

Which would have been interesting for a selection committe this year. Does UF get in over UGA? How about Oregon getting in over Stanford?

Gameday debated this last night, and Mark May was actually making a case for Oregon over Stanford.

SEC should get rid of it's conference championship game because of this...

They probably will also put the SEC teams in the same early round bracket, making sure that only one SEC team gets to the final.

The thing that scares me is the mention of the selection comittee being "football people", that's pretty broad and there are a lot of people who say they are football people that I don't want picking.

I'd rather computers over committee. Committe=bias, just like Voters. I read the SI story and saw that one consideration was the "hot" team, which negates the regular season. Third place in the SEC is going to mean more than 2nd if they don't get rid of the SECCG.
Also, are the going to take into consideration the unfairness in Conference scheduling? What if LSU BEATS Bama but loses to UF and UGA, while Bama rolls UT and UK? I know it's not due to begin next year. With our luck, when this system starts, it'll be the opposite and Bama gets the benefit if the doubt and gets in because they played a tougher East div schedule, despite one more loss.

Then we have solved nothing.

I predict the system will have to be tweaked to increase the number of playoff spots.

well, since there are only 4 slots available, i can forecast with much certainty that the sec will get fricked. there will never be more than one sec team in that system. they also will probably find a way to work in a boise state, rutgers or some weak sister. that leaves 3 legit teams and you can book it that the pac 12, big 10 and the sec will get first shot while the big 12 and the acc are gonna suck hind tit.

edited to say that the final four will be political as hell and there will be a furor across the nation that will dwarf the bcs furor. the only choice left will be to enlarge the playoffs. i'm afraid the sec title game may be in jeopardy. and that's bad because that title game is the only one in football that makes lots and lots of money for the member schools. the bcs system should be the way the final four are selected but that ain't happening.
