I think people just assume a scatback is one that gives the starter a breather, but that's not what a scatback is.
Guice is a traditional back, every down back, who is second on the depth chart.

It's like the year the Saints won the superbowl when they would run Pierre Thomas in the first half and beat up the defensive line then in the second half bring in Mike Bell with fresh legs against an exhausted defense. They would swap who went first but having a high quality fresh RB starting in the third quarter is a great strategy.
