Did he slip or fall down? Or did he just get a really late jump?

It looked like he thought it was a hit and run and on top of that he got a late jump

It was surreal looking.

The ball one-hopped to the plate, the catcher stood up, tossed it back in his glove to get a better grip and still calmly threw out Coomes by a couple feet.

I think wasn't a steal. It was a dirt ball read that the catcher picked cleanly out of the dirt. It was a good and some what luck play from the catcher since it didn't Boucher off of him and just stuck. An aggressive play that backfired that happens sometimes.

its called dirt ball reads. Your slower runners will read the trajectory of the ball and anticipate it being a difficult block by the catcher. 95% of the time, the catcher doesn't make a clean catch and doesn't even attempt a throw. When I played college baseball, this is one of the drills we practiced.

Bad secondary lead, if he would have been moving on the pitch he would have been safe.

In the post game presser last night Mainieri said Beau missed the hit and run sign I believe.

Even if he missed the hit and run, coomes still got a horrible jump. On a hit and run you turn and go, not hop down the line and then go.

Deichmann mentioned that they missed a couple calls in his post game interview, as well. I believe this was one of them.

he should have been at 2nd a few pitches before that on a ball
In the dirt. I'm sure the coaches mentioned it.

Somebody had to miss a sign, Coomes is too slow to try a straight steal. Batter didn't try to cover. FUBAR!

As a batter the only time you don't have to swing on a hit and run is ball in the dirt or if it hits you. This wasn't a hit and run though. I thought the same but watched the replay and he wasn't running on the pitch. It was just a late dirt ball read and the catcher made a good play
