My first memory of LSU football was the 97' game against florida, I was only 6 years old and only have a few images, that pass for memories in my head, of the game, and as far as my child hood goes, the only strong memories of LSU football for me started in 2000. But what I do remember is LSU sucking really bad in 98-99. But specifically to the 98' season, what happened. 1998 Season W-L schedule

I can see how the Georgia loss took some air out of the ballon and then the loss to Florida, but after that it seems like their may have been locker-room problems or a lack in leadership to lose to Kentucky, Ole Miss, etc...it seems like there was a lack in confidence, not talent.

things went bad for Gerry after that UF win.

Ole Miss next week rolled LSU in TS during the day.

Gerry decided he needed to be more involved in the D planning etc....

Led to DC bailing, hiring Tepper and the infamous "drop" linebacker

it was over before anyone knew what the hell happened

Lou Tepper was hired. His drop back linebacker scheme that he claimed would take 5 years to fully implement. What a joke.

We were actually a very good team in 98. Tyler and Faulk's senior season. We started off 3-0, number 6 in the country.

Then Georgia beat us 28-27, Quincy Carter had like 1 incompletion the entire game.

We were in every game we played that year, including Florida - we just happened to lose pretty much every one in the last 2 minutes.

They were all heartbreaking losses that LSU probably should have won.

But our defense could not stop anyone with the game on the line.

Only reason we lost to Arkansas so badly is because the team was deflated by then.

I was at that 97 Notre Dame game. It was rainy and cold. Irish won.

Looks like we just lost a ton of really close games. It happens.

"hey they have a really fast player, who should we put on him"
"how about our slowest linebacker?"
"sounds like a plan"

Poor guy was just a symptom of the problem. Sad, folks are still using him as a scapegoat to this day.

Cecil Collins divided that team in the locker room. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. That helped lead to DiNardo's downfall.

Oh, and that Lou Tepper drop linebacker thing too.

In September of '98 , LSU was actually ranked higher than Tennessee, the eventual BCS champion, the night we beat and Auburn and they beat Florida.

Two losses by 39-36. Only Arkansas really blew us out and nothing against the Hogs, but our guys really mailed it in that day towards the end of the first qtr.
