What exactly happened in 1998 to LSU football?

I was 11 and my memory is shaky. LSU rose to No. 6 i the polls after a great win at Auburn 31-19 and lost a heart-brekaer to No. 11 UGA 28-27. Then, close losses like 22-10 versus @ Florida (no shame), 39-36 vs. Kentucky (what the hell happened) before bouncing back and trouncing No. 14 MSU 41-6. Then, just head scratching close losses - 37-31 OT @ Ole Miss, 22-16 vs. Alabama where the Tide scored two TDs in the last two minutes and recovered an on-sides kick, 39-36 loss to Notre Dame and then a throttling 41-14 loss to Arkansas.
When you lose that many close games, something just seems off. Was this team bad, snake-bitten, poorly coached, injury-ridden, or just inevitably always found a way to lose?

Poorly coached is the short answer

Cecil Collins got kicked off the team in preseason.

Good team that lost some close good games

That Georgia game was a thriller. It was a JP 11am kickoff if I remember correctly

Quincy Carter arguably had one of the best QB performances in Tiger Stadium history that game

Literally exactly what I was coming to post.
If Dinardo would've gotten rid of him I have no doubt that he would've had a couple of SEC championships and possibly a NC. Dinardo doesn't get the credit he deserves.

That was the game where Tepper had Dunson lining up one on one against Champ Bailey. He didn't do a terrible job, for a LB trying to defend a Heisman candidate receiver.

our DBs were so far off the UK WRs that they weren't even on the screen. I think this was that game where Herb had like 5 total TDs though.
lost in the bad defense, and just general suckiness of the season was a good offensive season, and the best year of Herb's career.

wait, what?

Lou Tepper is pretty much the answer. The offense was very good but 8 returning starters on D went from a top 2 SEC defense to one near the bottom. State went to the SEC championship that year and 41-6 doesn't convey how dominant LSU was in that game. Extremely frustrating year.

night game. ESPN I believe. Booger had Quincy Carter all but sacked a few times, but dammit if he didn't break away or just complete some crazy pass under duress anyway. it was like he was John Elway out there. so frustrating.

Without '98....the timing to nab coaches is most likely altered and we never get Saban and Miles to LSU. The most painful season for me as an LSU fan...preaseaon top 10 and sooooo many close games that left you with the "what ifs" after a gut wrenching loss. Hit rock bottom in '99, but '98 was f'king brutal.

Averaged about 36 on Off.
Gave up about 38 on Def.

That was 99.
It's really incredible how many close games LSU lost in 98 and 99.
I will always say 98 LSU is the greatest 4-7 team in the history of college football.

Whoops, that was 1999. 1998 was when they recovered the late on-sides kick.

From purely an entertainment perspective... ABSOLUTELY.

He's thinking of the '99 game when JB tried to run it in, instead of throwing to an open WR in the endzone.

This was the first LSU football game I ever attended. I was 12 and I remember very clearly that it was an evening game. I distinctly remember sitting in standstill traffic on Nicholson leaving the game and being super upset. Quincy goddamn Carter.
