The other message board is locked, so since I am from Lockport,LA, knew Joe personally, I'll give you the scoop.

Joe was my childhood hero. I went to every Lockport High School game to watch Joe play. I wanted to be a running back like Joe.

Joe was from LaRose, but got into a little trouble. Mayor Nolan Toups took custody of him, but Joe lived with the Head Coach, Dudley Hillman, whose son Mike also played for LSU at QB.

When Joe graduated from LSU, he got drafted by the Oakland Raiders. They wanted him to return kick offs and punts. Joe said he was a running back. Oakland insisted, Joe came home. He got a job working for Texaco.

Joe ended up marrying Mayor Toups daughter. He has two girls, no sons playing baseball or football. He did not fall out of a high rise in Metairie. But, he did commit suicide. Doesn't matter how he did it.

Joe divorced his wife, or vise - versa, got into drugs, but he laid low. Very nice guy. Too many guys walking into bar rooms looking for trouble with Joe. I guess they wanted to see if he really was that bad. Yes, he was! I remember a few.

And no, Joe was not the guy that called the Ideal Restaurant in Lockport and ordered 15 Roast Beef Po -Boys to go under the name of Ralph Hargis. It was his brother Frank. Poor Mr. Ralph. He went through the rest of his life being called Roast Beef.

He had a son, Joe Labruzzo Jr., who played baseball at Southeastern and then became a fireman with BRFD.

I saw him play in my first game in TS in 1965 vs Miss St. I loved that LSU team. They went on to beat Arky in the 1966 Cotton Bowl.

Wasn't there a Mr. Labruzzo at Central Lafourche in the 80's?

My earliest memories of listening to John Ferguson calling LSU games on radio were when Joe Labruzzo played. A Tiger legend. Thanks for the post.

Just found an album on the internet published by Mike Robichaux which stated that Labruzzo was the best athlete he ever played with or against.

His wife if it's the same lady that was my teacher at CL in the early 2000's.

She still lives in Nolan Toups Subdivision, as do I. I see her walking from time to time.

*** My bad you said Mr, not Mrs.

but Mrs. Labruzzo was my teacher for a while at CL. I didn't know who she was until I was talking to Tommy Hodson's dad once at a CL spring scrimmage and he asked where I lived and I told him Nolan Toups, and he proceeded to give me the entire history of Nolan Toups subdivision and the Labruzzo's. Interesting stuff.

He lived below me in the married student apartments (recently demolished).A good neighbor, it didn't bother me that he had a new sports car and motorcycle,I was a fan and he could run a 9.7 hundred.
He got knifed in a bar fight while at LSU, when asked if he got hurt he replied "no" just this "stabbing" pain in my stomach.

Had painting for years of scene from 1966 Cotton Bowl where Tigers beat #1 Arkansas 14-7. Tigers 2 scores came on identical sequence of plays.....four runs in a row by Labruzzo behind my uncle, tackle David McCormick. Painting was of Pat Screen in background, having just handed off to Labruzzo, who is following the block of McCormick. Irony is that Screen and Labruzzo took their own lives and Uncle David had a massive heart attack and died at 41. Painting was owned by Cholly Mac who gave it to my aunt late in his life, telling her that the '66 Cotton Bowl was his biggest win ever.

Joe also had a brother named John labruzzo. Only reason I know this information is because my grandmothers father was John, making joe her uncle. Also many may not know they were adopted.
