What defines the LSU baseball team?

Last May, the LSU baseball team went on a 17-5 run to close the season, including 8-1 in SEC regular season play and 3-1 in the SEC tournament, enabling it to skyrocket to a 5th place finish in the SEC standings, tie for 3rd place in the SEC tournament and win a regional, which it hosted. The run ended with an 0-2 series loss in a super regional, which it also hosted. This year, practically the entire team returned intact.
For most people, apparently, that 22-game run is what defines (or defined) this team. Not the 44 games last year that preceded it, not the 42 games this year that have followed it, but those 22 games. At what point should this team be defined not by that one stretch of 22 games, but by the 86 games they played before and after those 22? When, if ever, do we have to accept that those 22 games were the anomaly and the other 86 are who our team really is?

Jesus H. Christ. Is today "How many ways can we address the same burning questions with a new thread" day?

Everything fell into place during that run....all the breaks and quirky bounces.....all the hits fell in...opponents hit the ball at us...pitchers had control. None of that is happening this year.

Cutesy celebrations after extra base hits.

These have been few and far between this year. No one can hit a double.

A baseball season is the sum total of all its games, not 2/3 or 1/3, but the average of all of them. LSU finished right where it should have last season, and by the end of this season the same thing will be true. LSU probably played a little worse than it should have during the first part of your premise and a little better than average over the last part.
That's baseball.
There is a randomness to the way a thrown ball comes off of a baseball bat, not to mention its relation to where a defense may choose to position itself. Its why baseball players are superstitious. A team can do everything the way it should -- swing the bat well, play error-free defense, hit all its spots pitching -- and still lose. That's why there's a seven-game World Series. Again, its all about the sum total (or average) allowing a team's true identity to be shown. Some people may want to define last year's World Series by the way Cleveland took what looked to be a commanding 3-1 lead, but most accept the combined output of all seven games, a 4-3 Chicago win, as proving which team was better.
However LSU finishes out the season, on a hot streak like last year or maybe on a conference losing streak, the team is going to finish right where it should in the SEC standings.

Easy.
A coach that has lost what little edge he had in recruiting coupled with a not-so-great hire for hitting coach in a program that is trending downward due to in-explainable losses and not being able to win a Super Regional against lower tier teams while only winning one game at the College World Series since 2009.

Men on base with nothing to show for it. It is almost like a curse to LSU batters who most of the time do all of the worst things you can do with runners in scoring position, pop-ups, strike outs, etc, etc.

May and June define top 20 teams. You really haven't figured that out?

For a group of people that seem to only care about what LSU has done in the post season the last 5 years they definitely seem to care about this regular season a lot and judge the team as if the year is over. This team needs major improvement and my confidence shrinks every game but still not going to judge this team fully until the season is over. Crazier things have happened in baseball than this team making a little run to end the regular season and maybe the postseason.
