I'm old enough to remember the 90's but not old enough to remember why we were so bad. I know (or at least think i know) tepper was the issue at the end before saban but why the hell were we so terrible at the beginning? Why did we hire/settle for curley? Who else was in the race with Gerry D? Was it money? Lack of leadership in the AD? Saban's master plan? Something else?

This, he made Hallman look like a coach at USM and we hired this fool. Took a terrible toll on the LSU program. Also proves that even with the talent in La, Texas and Ms. that comes to LSU you still have to be a good coach to win.

archer was a decent coach, but couldn't recruit a soul...I am talking pitiful, pitiful recruiting classes...every bit of in-state talent left...

Hallman was mediocre at best and the program had just fallen too low for him to have any hope of pulling it up...

Dinardo did make some progress, but discipline problems led to a team meltdown about a year before he could get it totally back on track...

There was no talent in Louisiana in the Mike Archer era due to prop 48.

It is Hallman that loses out on a world of talent in the early 90's.

LSU under archer only lost Michael Carr (Clemson) and one other and no one from Louisiana make ALL-American when recruited out of state. Under Hallman you have a who's who in football going out of state.

Hallman was not a football coach, and had less interest in building a winner and coaching than his off field actives.

Archer was a family man and loved the players and loved coaching, but was saddle with the new NCAA rules and an era of very low talent in state.

Archer went out of state to recruit and every big time recruit turned into a bust, that is another story with many major players and LSU would not let him fill needs for JuCO which Texas A&M and Miss St did and both had good runs at the time due to this tactic.

Oh the other player Archer lost out on was Baron Jackson, my high school English teacher's son, who went to Pitt. Those are the only 2 major recruits LSU lost out on in the Archer era, that LSU recruited hard.

My dad has had season tickets since God knows when and the 90's is when I became a LSU Football/sports fan. Greatest memories in the world to me were when DiNardo was the coach and we sucked oddly enough. The few upset games we had left an impression on me the has stained my blood purple and gold for life. I try not to worry why we were so bad just the great memories, plus i like to stay in the present and pay attention to why we are so good this year.

I actually did not realize this...I always thought archer just couldn't recruit because he wasn't much older than the players themselves...I'll have to do some reading...

Basically hiring Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier which lead to Curly.

Lots of things: The most obvious is bad coaching, but that's as much a symptom imo, of the root cause which is we did not commit the resources necessary to build a top notch program. Emmert and Saban changed the culture but without Emmert, there is no Saban.

You are being very kind.

The leadership at LSU went through a period where they were being cheap with hires and looking to hire second rate coaches instead of going after proven coaches.
