what cause Miles undoing

1) recruiting. yes, we had highly rated classes but they were due to the skill players. our recruiting in the trenches and LB was not good at all. the qb position was awful.
2) loyalty to asst. coaches. and these guys killed us in recruiting much needed players.

Haley
Chavis
when you have a DC that doesn't aggressively recruit it has to be made up by the rest of the staff. Chavis is a damn good coach but his '13 defense was very poor and his '14 defense (tho highly ranked at seasons end) cost us 3 games, two which were absolute blow outs. our front 7 just didn't hack it against teams with strong OL's like Bama, MSU, Auburn and Notre Dame.
by the time Miles reacted, it was too late. recruiting on the trenches takes awhile to be effective. and now we are faced with a smallish DL with little depth and freshmen on the OL and a serious problem at LB next year.
I don't like Cam much (as a coach) but if we had a better OL and front 7 I think we'd be OK on offense even with a first year QB and we'd sure be looking at making a run for the roses next year.
recruiting isn't just about star ratings it's about positions of need esp the trenches. it seems we are always one year away and that's because when we are great at some positions we are always deficient at others and then it changes.
yes, we needed to open things up and not be so predictable BUT if we had an OL that could hold their blocks along with TE's and RB's that could pick up blitzes and stunts we would still be a very effective offense.
I've heard we had the highest asst. coach payroll in college football. well, that certainly doesn't translate into the best asst. coaches in college football.
the last 4 seasons (incl this season) have been extremely disappointing. I love les miles but these recruiting errors and his loyalty to his asst.s is bringing him down.
lastly, all of these people that say Louisiana has all the talent needed to produce championship teams are WRONG. we sign more of our top talent than most, if not all schools but a state with 4 million persons just can't produce as much as larger states at EVERY POSITION.
Miles has gone out of state for many players but his asst.s didn't do enough for LB's and the LOS. sure, we got a few guys but Pocic is the only one left.
it's likely that miles could have turned things around with coach O, Steel and Grimes in this recruiting if they stayed (a big if, esp with O).But it appears things are crumbling around him and it's probably best to start anew. sadly, we are going to have some pains and maybe severe pains if we don't pick the right guy and he puts together a hell of a staff. sadly, we lose a great man and ambassador for LSU

Sadly just about all of his problems trace back to stubbornness.

I stopped reading when you started to bitch about Chavis. Chavis's only faults for losses were probably the Georgia 2013 game(I'm sure there were a few more)
Chavis kept Miles employed for a long long time.
People freak out about Chavis blowing games---> a competent offensive minded coach can close out a 4th quarter lead. Les couldn't do that.

His priority is playing his style of football and not winning. I know he wants to win, but not nore than he wants his brand of football to be played.

I made a fark board post almost 7 years ago with the Les Miles play sheet he probably uses on the sideline. Even that long ago, everyone knew his offense was terrible. Run, run, throw short of the sticks, punt. All runs not up the middle must be to the short side. If the box is stacked with defenders, double down on the run. So, it's time for a new mind with even moderately aggressive play calling please.

Remind me again, what position did Miles play, and coach as an assistant?

Steele is who we thought he was. A mediocre DC.

His love for dual threat qbs that couldn't complete the type of passes he needed to run his provstyle offense. He lived and died by the dual threat qb. But boy they were athletic.

we can agree to disagree. I stated Chavis was a good coach but his recruiting sucked as did his DL coaches recruiting. I have eyes and I saw MSU, Auburn, Bama and Notre Dame absolutely dominate our defense last year. and frankly, last years D was better than '13. the middle of that defense was the softest I've ever seen at LSU.

His team failed to get a stop in 2 games.
2012 Alabama and 2014 Alabama. He wins the 2012 game and we play for another title.
He wins either one of those games and we aren't having this discussion. It is very, very simple.
He is literally 2 minutes away from not being 'undone'. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

I've heard three things about Miles that bother me.
1) His fingerprints are all over the ineffective offense. He changes calls, screws with the flow of his assistants, etc. IF the HC feels they need to be involved in offense, they should only do so in a 'guiding' fashion - tell the OC what you want from the drive, then let them call the plays. A HC should almost never interfere with the play-call, IMO, unless they want to call all of the plays.
2) Favoritism is an issue with players. If you're not playing the best players, you're a fool. This accusation has come up a lot in the past 3-5 years. You cannot foster a 'competitive' practice environment if you're going to play some guys regardless of their practice and game performance. You have to engage all 75 scholarship players; that's true of any boss for any successful business, IMO.
3) Loyalty is nice, but Miles' loyalty to friendly coaches is a huge issue. Miles has never been pro-active towards clear failures in the coaching staff: he always waits until it's such a glaring issue that he has to react.
Miles is facing a real challenge to his position as head coach. If LSU can't get a replacement lined up, Miles might survive this year, but he will not be around next year without some serious alterations to the way he operates the LSU program.

at this point, I don't think it matters (if it ever did). I just kept hoping for miles to turn it around and I thought this year was it. boy, was I wrong.

He was spot on about Chavis. College football is as much or more about recruiting as it is about Xs and Os - Chavis was a non-entity on the recruiting trail. His big get was Clifton Garrett.

Bama in 2013? Auburn in 2014 (okay, we only scored 7, but we gave up 41)?
And lots of late drives given up to Bama and others. He's on the hook for more than 1 loss, that's for sure.

Flirting with Arkansas in 2012 used up what ever good will he had with the powers that be. He hit them when they were vulnerable, a year removed from 13-1 and an SEC Championship. Now they are returning the favor.

This is just nonsense. Clearly you haven't been paying full attention to this football team the last 5 years.
