The White team was the O correct?

Was the Go team the D?

What were the Chinese Bandits?

The Go Team was the 2nd team Offense
The Chinese Bandits were the 2nd team Defense
The White Team was the 1st team Offense and Defense.
The White Team was where #20 Billy Cannon(see above picture) and Warren Rabb #12 the quarterback stopped Elmore on the goal line stand. I wasn't at the game but was giving out Trick or Treat candy on my parents front porch listening to the game on the radio. The LSU play by play announcer J.C. Polites(sp); went crazy when Cannon broke the 50 yard line heading for the end zone. You could hear the stadium erupting with excitement. I was 11 years old at the time. Have been and forever will be a TIGER fan. Billy Cannon was a National Hero to all who lived in Louisiana from that day forward.

Are you going to the game tomorrow night?

Nope - don't get to go much. Too expensive.

Last time I was there was when my granddaughter was a Golden Girl - btw - the Golden Girls were organized when I was there - don't remember the exact year but I was there 56-60.

I hear you. I've been in CO since the early '70s but an old HS buddy of mine got some tickets to the Gator game in 2003. That's the last time I've been in Death Valley. The good thing is all of the games today are televised, so it's not like listening to John Ferguson & Walter Hill on scratchy radio reception.

Here's a link to Billy Cannon's run and some documentary about the game.
YouTube of documentary piece on the 1959 game.

Btw, when you watch the run, note the ref running alongside him down the sidelines. He's a fake ref. Was a high school ref and dressed in his ref outfit to get into the game since he couldn't get a ticket.

I was there = north end zone in line with the east hash marks about 2/3 the way up. Me, my wife and 10 month old son, and my mom and dad.

Cannon ran straight toward us. At first it was hard to see what was happening, but by the time Cannon passed the 50 it was obvious he was going all the way.

The stadium was erupting. Some drunk from above us came tumbling down the stairs and got up yelling his head off - not a scratch on him.

The most anxious part of the game was holding the Rebels inside the 5 yd line for four plays to end the game.

The day before the game was the most excited I had ever seen the campus. You could hear "GO TO HELL OL MISS!!" all day and into the night. From the time the bus carrying the team arrived it was constant noise.

Truth be known, Ol Miss probably had the better team, but they tried to nurse a 3 pt lead for the whole game - punting on third down to make sure nothing bad happened on fourth. I thought that was dumb of them at the time, and it probably cost them the game.

But the Cannon run was special. I'll never forget that game.

Thanks for sharing ! I was hoping to see some posts like this !

I'll also never forge the next week when we were upset by Tennessee. Cannon always swears he scored on the two point conversion attempt, but the refs didn't see it.

It looked to me like he scored. Found the play on YouTube

I was 4 yrs old for the 1959 game and was told I stayed with my aunt while my mother and father went to the game. Story goes he woke me up yelling go Tigers when they got home late that night. My first home game was 1961 vs Ole Miss and still have the ticket stub. In 1961 Ole Miss was ranked #2 and LSU #6, final score LSU 10-7 over Ole Miss. Final ranking for LSU was #4 with a 10-1 record, losing to unranked Rice 16-3 in sept.

My dad graduated from Istrouma High School with Billy Cannon. I was a few years beyond that game (born the last time Ole Miss won a National Championship).

WHITE team played both ways.

GO Team was offense only

Chinese Bandits were defense.

White team started each quarter and played both an offensive and defensive series. Then either the GO or CB team went in. When possession changed, the other went in. If there was another change of possession before the quarter ended, the WHITE team went back in and played the remainder of the quarter.

The rules then were that only a player who was on the field when the quarter started could be removed and come back into the game during that quarter.

The Chinese Bandits knew a couple of offensive plays in case they should get trapped on the field due to some circumstance. It never happened. I don;'t think think the GO team had any defensive expertise at all.

The Bandits did play offense once though - I think it was against DUKE. Nobody had scored on the Bandits until the Duke game, and the Bandits told Deitzel 'we want to get our touchdown back.' He allowed them to play a series at the end of the game and they did score. Final score was something like 56-7.

Great days back then.

Great post.

I was there sitting in the curve of the upper deck of the south end zone. It was a warm and very humid night. Ole Miss kicked a field goal in the first quarter. Neither team could move the ball very well against the strong defenses that both teams had. Coach Vaught didn't think the Tigers could score against his defense and he was probably right. He started punting on 3rd down rather than risk a turnover that could put the Tigers in a position to score. The Jake Gibbs punt slightly out kicked the coverage. It looked like the Rebels did not expect Cannon to field the punt after it bounced. But it took a great hop right to Cannon and he was able to avoid the first couple tacklers. He broke several tackles in the first 25 to 30 yards and faked out the last Rebel Gibbs around midfield right in front of the Rebels bench and Coach Vaught. Cannon scored with 10 minutes to go. The Rebels then held the ball and drove down the field until Cannon and Rabb stopped Elmore at the one on 4th and goal with under a minute to go. The goal line stand was in the south end right in front of my seat. Both teams were completely exhausted when the game ended. I was only 13 but it was a great game that you never forget if you were lucky enough to be there!

I was there, sitting on the west (home) side about the 35 yard line and about halfway up in the stands. Great seats! I was a student at Northwestern State College ( Natchitoches) at that time but was a LSU fan. Had season tickets in 1958 and 1959. Saw every home game both years.

About the 1959 Ole Miss game, Cannon's TD run looked so surreal because it was late in the game and it was getting foggy. Cannon caught the
ball after it hit the ground around the LSU eleven yard line and bounced right into his hands. He started running rather slowly at first,
bouncing off several Ole Miss tacklers. The action was on the east side of the field and Cannon was fairly close to the sideline.

There was a big jumble of players in the vicinity, both LSU and Ole Miss, because everybody was converging on the ball. Cannon kept
getting hit by Rebs, probably broke 4 or 5 tackles, and then near the 50 yard line he broke into the clear and nobody was going to catch him.

He scored, LSU kicked off to Ole Miss, and they proceeded to move the ball down field. Fourth and goal, inches from the goal line, I think it was Cannon and Warren Rabb that stood the Ole Miss QB, running a QB keeper, up inches from the goal line and the game was over.

Exciting? you bet! You can't imagine how that place sounded when Cannon scored on the punt return and again after that magnificent goal line stand.
