Being able to actually coach them up, and be successful. Not to get to the tournament and beat in the first round. Now, he got to a couple final fours, and a couple elite 8's. But there were far more first round losses, and almost as many non appearances.

He made the tourney 10 straight years and 13 out of 15 years from 79-93. In those 13 tourney appearances:

2 Final 4's
2 Elite 8's
1 Sweet 16
2 2nd Rounds
6 1st round exits

I think advancing to the Elite 8 over 30% of the time that you make the tourney is impressive.

Yes, he recruited some awesome talent.
And then, there was the "Freak" defense...

Coach Brown took on and beat many powerhouse programs during the regular season too - Loyola-Marymount, UNLV, Georgetown

That was conceived and installed by a friend of Dale's who was a Trailblazer's assistant coach at the time. Can't remember his name.

You just asked for us to hire Miles back?

As basketball coach? Sure. Why not?

Can't be any worse than the status quo.

ETA: He has said repeatedly that he "just wants to coach again."

Interesting fact: Over a 9 year span of tourney appearances Dale Brown lost to the eventual NCAA champ 5 times. That's just an unfortunate tournament draw there.

Dale was a great recruiter and elite motivator. Average coach.

This is 100% correct. Now that being said, the energy and excitement he brought to LSU basketball was unparalleled. I was there for it in the late 70s and I have to say, the energy and excitement in the Assembly Center was just off the charts.

Dale was only as good as his best assistant, and most of the time he had some pretty good ones who knew how to coach (Art Tolis, Rick Huckaby, Tex Winter).

It goes beyond that. Dale would admit that he was not the best Xs and Os guy (and I believe he actually stated that), but it takes more than just that. I'm sure the assistants helped with that part, but motivating and pushing buttons at the right time during the game are what Dale was great at (and motivating them before the game even started). Many aren't that good with that part and it's a big part of being a successful coach.

Hell, in his first game ever as a coach with a team of nobodies, he upset #11 Memphis by over 10 points. So he was no basketball dummy...but he could obviously do dumb things at times.

More nonsense. You don't take two entirely different teams with two entirely different skill sets to the final four without coaching them up.

You can have all the coaching up in the world, but if you haven't recruited talent you are not going to win the big ones.

What Brown was able to do at LSU for his first 15 years or so was amazing considering the state of LSU baseball before his arrival.

Bob Knight was worried about playing LSU until he looked across the table and saw Dale Brown coaching LSU.

My dad still brings up Knight slamming the phone down in the 1987 Elite 8 and not getting thrown out then LSU blowing the game with the spread offense every now and then.

I always love how people will blame Dale for going into the spread when they lost to Indiana. Of course they conveniently forget or don't realize he went into the spread when they beat Georgia Tech in the First Round, # 2 seed Temple in the Second Round and # 3 seed DePaul in the Sweet 16. Always fair to point out the one time it didn't work and ignore the three times it did. BTW that LSU team, a # 10 seed went to the Elite 8 with a starting lineup of Daryl Joe, Anthony Wilson, Oliver Brown, Bernard Woodside and Nikita Wilson. What did all those guys have in common? Not one of them made it to the NBA. That year was without question an exceptional job of coaching by Dale.

No, not the point spread. The spread offense that has smeared Louisiana State coach Dale Brown with inglory in the last two tournament meetings between these two teams.
