That is more semantics. There are variations of the spread and variations of the pro style. However, we had stacked personnel last year. Even with that, it wasn't a prolific offense. Take away the better players and you are left with an offense that Les loves. Three runs and a punt.

You are talking about two quarterbacks that are NFL caliber built for those types of offenses.

I fail to see how Harris doesn't fit a pro style system.

Hell, Drew Brees came from the spread in college as a "system" QB and adapted pretty well in the NFL

Not two spread offense guys that you recruited.

A lot of high school players play a different position all together.

Harris absolutely has the skill set to run a pro style offense.

TigerBlood is correct. Everything has went great for LSU except the state stopped developing SEC QB's. LSU has kept up with Bama until the NFL departures, even with them having the better QB play the entire time. Miles adjusted and continued to bring in guys who could graduate and still compete for SEC titles every year. Even our receivers are adjusting better to the NFL game, without near as many catches, as others. Its hard to believe that an entire state can be in this big of a drought on developing its high school kids to be QB's.

Louisiana produced a top-notch quarterback. You may have heard of him. Name is Dak Prescott. LSU slept on him until it was too late, and even then, wouldn't commit to playing him at quarterback. Speaks volumes about the inability of the staff to develop quarterbacks and identify potential quarterback talent.

we don't run anything close to what is currently run by offenses in the NFL. Maybe a 1970's-80's pro style system.

quote:

QBs take hand offs from under center

They line up in the shotgun way more than they line up under center and none run the I formation as their primary formation. Nor do they try to overpower the defense by running straight at them with no attempt at deception. Most pro teams gave up long ago the idea of getting the running game going in order to open up the passing game. They seem to do the reverse of that. A LSU style offense would have no chance of working in the pros these days. Defenses are just to good and talented for that to work any more.

I gotcha Cheo. I'll give u that one. But I dont recall the Fire Les tards screaming over losing Prescott.
Maybe I should say outside Shreveport/Bossier. Theyve produced 2 in the last 10 yrs in our 2nd or 3rd largest city. We will cut them some slack, whats going on with the rest of the high schools?
Theres no one 6ft 1+ with some speed and agility along with a decent arm and accuracy in the entire state ever? Where's JJ?

If anything, you need a better QB to throw out of a spread passing attack.

I disagree with that. The best thing for an inexperienced or not necessarily great QB is to put in good positions to throw. Not 3rd and long when the defense is waiting for him. Plus give him a few more options to throw to. Also from the shotgun the QB can concentrate more on looking downfield as soon as he receives the snap instead of having to play action and then drop back.

OUr goal each year is to first win the SEC west. In order to do that we have to beat some really good defenses with just as good of personnel as we have (or much better in the case of Alabama). Your not going to overpower defenses like Auburn, Mississippi St, or Alabama by lining up in the I formation and running right at them. We should run an offense, even against our weaker opponents, that is going to work when it counts, against the big boys of the SEC west.

Should a college offense be designed to win games or put players in the NFL?

Both Jennings and Harris would look better running a pro style offense instead of what we are currently running.

I don't watch a ton of NFL football, but whenever I do they are in the shotgun more often than not. The NFL has become more and more of a passing league over time.

AS far as recruiting, I would think that they would want to play in a system in which they get to highlight their skills. WR's and TE's want the ball thrown their way. The RB's want room to run and the chance to show off receiving ability (very important for NFL running backs not named Adrian Peterson). QB's want to show they can make plays and want to develop their passing skills. /The ability to pass block is very important for NFL o-lines. College lineman have to show the agility and feet to handle pass blocking and blocking in space even more so than just lining up and drive blocking the man in front of them.

The pros are a good pro style offense can control the ball, can control the clock, and when executed is hard to stop.

The cons are, it takes a real QB to be balanced and it gets harder to do things when it isn't balanced.

Our scheme worked last year. It isn't the rest of the SEC catching up to our scheme, it is the rest of the SEC keeping their talent while we sent ours to the pros.

OK the rant is actually talking football here. Thank you. Other than a couple of people who obviously have no clue, I appreciate this.

I would love to join the debate any other time, but my lady and I have knocked off three bottles of sake...fun yes and we had a nice time. Unfortunately, I am not able to communicate.
