I think it's safe to say Key will be the edge guy rushing but who's best suited for the San playing Contain?

I'd say Neal considering he's built like an Ox.

Key is buck
Bower is F followed by Divinity
Neal is LE

F? I thought that was the fullback on the diagram.

I'd like to see Neal in our 2-4 nickel set. We have a lot of weapons to disrupt the passing game with that look.

But I hope Bower added a little weight. He was pretty solid in run containment last year though to be honest.

Aranda runs a 1 gap 3-4 if I'm not mistaken.

You are not mistaken. It's more streamlined. Less thinking more making shite happen.

I can't imagine a system where Valentine doesn't take two Gaps allowing Beckwith and Riley to roam free

No, it's not a one gap defense. I have no idea where anyone got that from.

Aranda runs a 2 gap scheme where the F linebacker plays to the field or far side and the buck (boundary) linebacker plays to the sideline.

There's a few fronts he'll run:

-- o o
o x x x o base

-- o o
o x x x nickel

- o o
o x x o 2-4-5

And then there's different fronts where the linebackers may shift around and there's only one defensive lineman

You are correct. It's a 2 gap system. If Valentine plays, he can easily take the A gaps. He'll also most likely draw double teams making the RB bounce. Then our LBs can fill the open hole to make plays.

I agree. I heard that Aranda runs a 1 gap system as well. I forgot where I saw it or who said it but I know it was on this site. Might have been a link. Idk what to think cuz some ppl say he runs a 1 gap and some ppl say he runs a 2 gap.

you'd need 3 wide-arse tackles if they all have 2 gap responsibility.

Alright well I guess I'll stick with 2 gap then lol. I like that better anyways since it gives our LB more room to make plays.

U ain't lying man. Last year was so foreign to me. That wasn't an LSU defense. So glad we made a great hire. I just hope we can keep him for at least 3 years.

Aranda runs a 1 gap system, not a 2. He's said as much. Simplicity and the ability to attack the offensive weakness. Faster more agile DL is what he goes for. 2 gap must have the size

Because Aranda said it....

Aranda is 1 gap, not sure where some of you are getting 2-gap from. 2-gap is like what Bama does and they have huge linemen and linebackers. Aranda runs 1 gap and attacks as opposed to plugging holes and occupying "spots".

Really good breakdown by a Miami fan, actually:
