The officiating wasn't the best. But, LSU brings alot of that on themselves.
My biggest problem is the way the officials seem to let the guards create the contact when going to the basket, but the call always seems to go against the D. Sometimes warranted, but sometimes not.

From the NCAA. The officiating is not going to change and CJJ better adjust.

quote:

The rules that the committee adjusted have been part of basketball in some form for many years. The interpretation and application, through time, loosened and a more physical style of play resulted. The committee decided a correction was needed in these two areas to improve the game and ensure a balance between offense and defense.

Defending the Player with the Ball

What Changed:
Several officiating guidelines were voted in as rules, which raised the expectation and importance in this area. Four types of illegal tactics were cited:
1. Placing and keeping a hand/forearm on opponent.
2. Putting two hands on opponent.
3. Continually jabbing by placing hand or forearm on opponent.
4. Using an arm bar to impede the progress of the dribbler.

Note that simply touching the player with the ball is not an automatic foul.

Intended Outcomes:
• Defenders will need to move their feet as opposed to using their arms/hands to negate an offensive opportunity.
• Increased emphasis will create a less physical game.
• Enhancement of freedom of movement principles and a smoother game flow.

A win is a win, but LSU continues to hurt itself with foolish fouls and turnovers. I like the fast tempo and aggression, but we have got to correct these problems quickly.

I'm fine with hand checking. What I'm not fine with is players breaking the plain of verticality causing the contact and getting rewarded for out of control play

the dribbling travel violation

I agree this game was horribly called but on the traveling call JOB did switch his pivot foot thus the travel. People keep making a big deal out of that call but on the replay you could see that he traveled.

I said a million times during the UMass game: basketball might get hard to watch during the next season or two, but the game will emerge way better if the officials stay the course.

You say this, but it's only true if the officials are consistent in what they call. They have not been. At all. It changes from one half to another, one possession to another. I agree with you in principle that it will force defenders to use their feet and make the game less about pushing people around, which should cause improvements for the better.

I think the issue with this particular call is the way the announcers called it. "Johnny O'Bryant called for traveling while dribbling" sounded so completely absurd that most of us ignored what actually happened on the play and took the suggestion of the announcers instead.

I watched Texas/North Carolina before the LSU game. It was a well played game with some great players and plays on both sides. There wasn't a lot of fouls called but then again there was much better defense played then in our game.

The first half of the Texas/UNC game had about 30 fouls and 40 free throws

Shaq would have shot 30 free throws a game with these new rules.

...and made 8 to 12 of 'em!
