How does a guy like Stallings get drafted and not Newman?

Potential. Newman's arm is probably perceived has having reached it's max potential and he's in the mid 80's for the most part. MLB is all about power arms. You rarely see a guy that throws below 90 unless he can put the ball anywhere he wants. Newman, although his stuff is good and he is an accurate pitcher, doesn't have the command to be drafted with a weaker arm. Stallings upside is higher because they believe they can probably teach him some command.

Yeah I get that. Just crazy that one has had a good career here and the other not so much. But I'm a firm believer that a player can turn things around. Baseball is a weird sport. You can be terrible one year and have a career year the next.

A couple things at play, 1) Newman was likely contacted by teams at a certain point(late in the draft) and he just told them he was going to come back to LSU 2) Newman is the prototypical senior sign, fringe stuff but great results, meaning he was likely always gonna come back and get drafted next year.

I truly believe we're gonna hear from him in the bigs.

I agree. Stallings has more big league potential than anyone on the team except Lange and Latz.

The problem with Newman is that he's maxed out. His velocity won't increase more than 2 mph and his control is maxed out.
