What is so bad about being called "state".

does the university of "ohio" get more credibiltiy than the "ohio STATE university"?

Why does everyone keep starting these threads? It doesn't matter what UL-L calls themselves. They are not LSU, they play in the Sunbelt, they are mediocre at best in every major sport.

LSU has nothing to worry about concerning their "flagship" status.

And as far as UL-L people dying to call themselves "UL". Stop! Stop asking people, organizations, other schools, etc.... to give you titles that you feel you are owed!

Just go win freaking games, earn respect and who gives a shite what you are called, JUST BE A WINNER INBETWEEN THE LINES AND IN THE CLASSROMM!!!

Like La, they are one of the exceptions to the rule.

Most states, the "state" university is the inferior to the "University of," and isn't the flagship.

Because they can never be a flagship hub of their own system, much less a state, they want to placate themselves by just being called one by "standard" convention I guess.

UPenn is a private school.

We are talking about multiple teirs of public schools within a state.

You are what you are. Changing your name doesn't change a thing. You cant polish a turd with a name change.(Yes I did see myth busters.)

Meh, I am mostly against it because they don't deserve it.

If they can fight they way to even get into LSU's academic and especially research categories I probably won't mind it as much.

But they don't really have anything to make them worthy of a name bigger than a regional school.

ULL should strive to be the best school it can be, but changing its name in an attempt to fabricate an air of prestige is not the way to go about it. Take all of that time and effort and money and put it towards increasing endowments, professor salaries, and graduate programs.

Its better to be a great school named Louisiana-Lafayette than a mediocre school named Louisiana.

Here inlies the problem for USL. They can't do either so they instead try to boost their egos with the UL designation. I really did not know or care much about UL-L until Tiger Droppings, but seeing and hearing what they do in order to raise their self esteem is just sad. Burning LSU shirts in a bonfire. Professors making students take of LSU caps in class... Its all quite ridiculous what lengths they go to...

What about the University of Louisiana-Monroe? Don't they have every bit the same right to be called "University of Louisiana" or "UL" as their counterpart in Lafayette???
