In 2011 Clemson went 10-4 beat Va. Tech to win the ACC championship, lost 70-33 in a bowl game to West Virginia

I agree that there are too many variables, but this is truly a mediocre hire given his history. He's been a DC for 4 years. In that time, he's one defense in the top 19 and 2 30th or above. I don't think he's as horrible as many choose to believe, but he's not a coach that as a coordinator instills confidence in his playcalling and scheming abilities.

Very fair analysis, but the hay is in the barn as they say. I am going to support him and stay positive until he gives me a reason not to.

The point was, his BEST defense rank (#13) also just happened to be the year his offense had their best TOP rank (#77). So yes there is some sort of correlation there. Where do you suppose his D would be if they had the #7 TOP offense like LSU had last year?

I think even the worst negatiger could answer that correctly.

Um no. Let me help. Yes 2010 was the best TOP (77th) and defense (13/19), but when you compare the other 2 years as well you see this argument has little to no bearing at all. In 2009 TOP was 102nd, just 2 spots better than 2011. However the defensive rankings were quite different - 25/20 compared to 81/71. Also it gets even more ridiculous if you look at the actual average TOP each year:

Avg TOP by year
2009: 28:13
2010: 29:12
2011: 28:05

So by the original argument, the additional 8 seconds of average possession per game was a main contributing factor to the disparity of being ranked 25/20 defensively vs 81/71. No. Just no.

Sometimes there is causality. Sometimes there is correlation. Here there is neither.
