True story - I talked to a SEC ref this week.

I ran into a SEC ref in Target (of all places) in Birmingham this week. He was in line behind me and saw that I was wearing my LSU hat. He said something along the lines of, "Good game yesterday huh? Too bad for y'all." I just agreed, but followed up with, "Yea, but that's what you get with a SEC crew." He then revealed to me as we were walking out of the store that he was a ref. Not just any official, but one of the officials that called the LSU/UGA game and part of the crew that called the Florida/Arkansas game. If you recall, the same crew that was suspended a week after the UF/Arkansas game. He said that he was not the one that called the celebration penalty against UGA, which I admitted was a bad call, but thanked him for it.
Now, he did, however, admit to me that he called the personal foul that allowed Florida to get back into the game against Arksansas. Why did he call it? Well, I asked him. His EXACT words were, "I was running down the sideline and saw the guy hit the turf from the corner of my eye, after the play was over, so I threw the flag." When asked why he would throw a flag on something he didn't see or something he thought he saw, all he could say was, "I made a mistake."
I asked him about Petersen's pick and review and he agreed the wrong call was made. Well no shite.
Even though I wanted to kick him in the shins, I was polite to him and never rude. I shook his hand and left. Just figured I'd tell the rant my small story from the week.

i swear to God. He was very sincere and seemed pretty regretful. You don't have to believe me if you don't want to.

Has that dude made bail yet? He was busted by a naval officer at his class reunion.

I would've asked him what a HS official needs to do to become a SEC official b/c apparently it's not that hard. i'm surprised the guy actually admitted he was a SEC official to you

The white hat threw the flag and he wasn't anywhere near the sideline. The details will get you every time.

I'm just telling you what he told me. Like I said, you can choose to believe me or not believe me. I don't care.

I always think it's funny when people bullshite other people. My roommate from LSU played baseball for Skip. He told me that alot of times when the kids get a ball in the dugout for them to sign, alot of times they sign names like Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. I thought it was pretty assholish, funny, but still kinda mean.

Odd that he would publicly volunteer to call himself out like that.

I know an SEC official from Baton Rouge, who now lives in Beaumont, Tx. Believe me.....there is NO frickING WAY this guys talks about this to you. This is a total bullshite story.
My buddy lays really low. Has never talkes about the games. BTW...He hasn't been a part of any of the contraversial crews.

quote:Man what a great story . Thats really a chance of a lifetime encounter. And you are so bold for having confronted him with his crappy officiating. I'm a little surprised that he was so candid in his responses though - especially his willingness to admit incompetence. However I believe every word of your story. Great recon. Thanks for sharing.

Well I was for sure the ref running across the field towards the play threw the flag. That "ref" you talked to must have wanted to take the heat or he wanted the spotlight.

Are you sure you didn't just read this, and then make some other shite up?

Curles, 41, a Birmingham financial planner and a Southeastern Conference referee, spoke Tuesday at the North Alabama Football Officials Association annual banquet. He joined kindred spirits who may officiate as many as four games a week, much as he did in developing his career.
quote:
That passion has been tested. Curles' crew has been involved in two highly publicized erroneous decisions this season, leading to a suspension from the SEC office.
