But, geez, even suggesting Coach Mac is better than Miles is retarded.

The recruiting game is far different in 2012 than it was in 1975. LSU recruited regionally during Coach Mac's tenure. Today, a program must recruit nationally to be successful. Early recruiting was not in place during Coach Mac's tenure. Also, the top athletes wanted to come to LSU. That seemed the logical place for any boy raised in Louisiana to want to play football...The beginning of the end for Coach Mac was 1978 when both John Fourcade from Shaw HS and Tommy Wilcox from Bonnabel HS both shunned LSU to attend Ole Miss and Alabama, respectively.

not to mention Bama would give out scholarships to people just to keep them from going to other SEC schools, knowing that there was little chance these players would ever see actual playing time for bama

The Bear would offer scholarships to kids just to keep them away from competing schools, when he had absolutely no plans on using them.
It was a different era. Miles is well loved compared to the fire rained down on Coach Mac his final years here. It was a changing atmosphere in college football and he just didn't adapt to keep up with it.

I was in the student section for that LSU-Ole Miss game.

This plus he had use of all types of academic scholarships for football players which LSU never would allow to happen. Alabama has never had any kind of integrity regarding their football program and what they will do.
