NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Cardinals are "deep in negotiations" with Tyrann Mathieu (ACL) on an extension which would make him the "highest-paid safety" in the NFL.
It is debatable whether Mathieu should be considered a safety, but this report at least puts the potential numbers in perspective. Eric Berry is set to make the most money this year ($10.8 million) under the terms of his franchise tag, but the largest AAV for a safety on a long-term deal belongs to Earl Thomas at $10 million. Devin McCourty falls slightly below Thomas in terms of average salary, but his five-year deal netted him $28.5 million guaranteed. While Mathieu would be easily worth those numbers healthy, he has torn his ACL twice since 2013 and has an extremely slight frame. The average value of his upcoming extension will likely be eye-popping, but the Cardinals might resist giving him big, long-term guarantees.

Hopefully he stays healthy because they aren't going to give him a lot of guaranteed money. When he's healthy he is possibly the best defensive player in the game.

Totally agree; not only that, he has become a great ambassador for the Cards. He certainly has come a long way.

He has exceeded my expectations for him that's for sure. I thought he was too small, but he's has proved me wrong and a lot of other people wrong

It's good to see people like this get paid, because you know he's going to give back to the youth in his community that desperately need it

I thought he was intentionally injured on the return he got the first one.
I am sure that happens whether it did in that one. Some DE's look to break a shoulder of the QB when they slam them to the ground and put their weight on it on the way down.

Really happy for Tyrann. Knowing where he came from, he's living the American dream.

I wish the NFL would provide more financial counseling for their players. Too many players who find themselves with more money than they ever dreamed of having get hoodwinked by "financial advisers" and by the time they are out of the league 5-10 years, they are flat broke.

IMO, the league should do more to provide objective financial advice that is not self-serving intended to siphon the player's money away.

easily the most fascinating LSU player to watch in my lifetime...I found him on the field each play and just watched him... happy that he got his life on track.

Cards must have a great deal of respect for his abilities if they're doing this while he's still rehabbing.

Good for him.

I love Tyrann Mathieu but he's too injury prone for a big time contract. No thank you.

Congratulations to him though. He's worked hard.

Low risk high reward has certainly paid off for the Cardinals. With all the stupidity that comes from NFL players, I'm still surprised people were scared of this guy because he was a pot head.

I completely agree! He has put the team 1st 100% of the time. I also think a big shout out needs to go to PP7 for being a mentor/big brother to Mathieu. Glad to say both of these men were tigers!

It doesn't matter what they give him. He takes what he wants.
