Timing of the announcement is odd

Notre Dame is in playoff contention. Kelly was just lobbying for them to earn a spot. I’m not saying I wouldn’t be happy I’m just not sure it’s really a done deal. Is this like the democrats casting ballots after the election and willing the win? I’m so confused what does it all mean?!?!
