Do you agree that Brando's logic (and the logic of others who are quick to complain about teams scheduling weak opponents) punishes temas with a strong schedule? If not, explain.
Hell no I don't think HIS logic skews the ratings. I think ANY logic used to rank teams in the preseason is a COMPLETE FARCE because they are ALL SUBJECTIVE. They are ALL based on the individual voter's perspective of who he THINKS will be best based on whatever variables he chooses to put in HIS equation. He can look at talent and he will have to guess on how newcomers will face, he can look at schedule and have to guess who will win games, etc...
Bottom line is that no matter what logic a voter uses, they will be basing their preseason votes on guesswork or information from previous seasons in which teams were composed of different players. I am a HUGE fan of going to no preseason polls and not starting the poll for the year until around the 4th week. That way, while the poll will still contain elements of guesswork, that guesswork can be minimized by relying on information from the actual season and from actual games. Much less guesswork.
I don't think their is a logic that exists that can justify having a preseason ranking. I think it is ridiculous to get mad at voters because they don't share YOUR opinion. They are supposed to be free thinkers and, therefore, likely have a wide range of opinions.

I think they all realize that they are supposed to rank the teams based on returning talent, new talent, coaching changes, spring games, summer practice, yadda, yadda...but in the end, I think they're all egotistical and want to be able to say that they had it right on day 1. Job security, I guess. But, I'm of the belief that it really doesn't matter. I think LSU, UGA, and FL would likely give anybody in the country a run for their money on Jan. 8 (and vegas probably would agree). Unfortunately, we all won't make it to the ship. The SEC will be brutal this year, so teams like OU, WVU, OSU, and USC should have a better shot. Unless of course, this year turns out as crazy as last year.

There is no directive on what voters should base their rankings.

I agree that the first poll should be about week 4 or later. But once again, I am not busting on Brando because he holds a different opinion than me. Based on what he said, I beleive that we hold the same opinion--that LSU is a better football team than others he has ranked ahead of us.
My problem is he admits that his formula for a high ranking is percieved talent, coaching, etc. + weakness of schedule.
Do you not agree that this is horseshite that can result, for example, in a 1-loss team being ranked ahead of another 1-loss team simply because it started off with a higher ranking based on having a weaker schedule?

There is no directive on what the posters should base their rankings on. You may have a different opinion but that doesn't make it so.

I am well aware that there is no such "directive." I am not even suggesting that there should be. I am just saying that the criteria he admits to using is idiotic, and I am not just relying on my opinion, but giving the reason I feel that way. Can you give any reason that Brando's method makes any sense? . . . I didn't think so.

By your own imposed directive, you are trying to vote who the "best" team is. By his, he is trying to vote on who he thinks will be the best or last team standing at the end. Different basis for voting, different criteria and rationale. When you have so many voters without a directive then you are bound to get varying opinions. Nothing to get so hung up about. Or a reason to call him an idiot.

Yeah, I don't think it is fair to pre-season rank a team based on schedule. You have to start them based on who you think is better, then let the chips fall.

Exactly. Let the chips fall where they may. If we lose those tough games then we will fall in the polls. But if we win them, we shouldn't ranked behind a team that won easier games just because the likes of Tim Brando was guessing we would lose! That's all I'm saying.

Don't get me wrong, I happen to be of the school of thought that you should rank teams based on which team you think is most talented, i.e. play the best football. I just think it is harsh to call someone idiotic because they choose to use a different system of ranking when so system is specified. That is all.

Idiotic may have been harsh. How about stupid?
No seriously, give me a playoff!

And yet some people still don't want a playoff. They still don't want the best team to be decided on the field.
